  • PVC Sleeve for 9" or 12" Pin

    Q:

I recently received the clips and the pins with the PVC sleeve. The clips are way too loose and the oars don't snap or lock on to the sleeve like I believe it should. I don't think there's any way to squeeze the clips to make them fit the PVC any tighter, absent maybe using a vice or something, and I didn't want to try that without your advice.

So what did, I went to the hardware store and bought the regular white PVC which is a little thicker, and substituted that. The clips do fit a lot tighter but the PVC isn't as strong and is peeling off where the clips attach. The oars are also really hard to take off. They do pop out, though, if I hit a rock or something in the river.

So my question is, do you have any thicker PVC sleeves or have a recommendation on where to find something like that? Or is there a way to squeeze the clips to make it narrower without compromising the strength? Or any other suggestion?

    Thank you!

      A:

Jeff, I rowed pins and clips for many years, using these clips and sleeves. You can certainly squeeze the jaw of the clip tighter. A vise would be preferable, but I probably more often used a rock down by the river. You want the opening of the clip tight enough so it takes some effort to put it on and off the pin sleeve. If the opening is too wide the oar will slip off too easily. I stepped on to row a friend's boat once. He had the opening so loose an oar popped out and I flipped the boat. It's okay to have some looseness between the clip and the sleeve. The sleeve will wear over time and need to be replaced. Don't worry about compromising the strength of the clip by bending it. Keep the black side down!
