Two layers of nylon webbing secure the D-Ring to a 840 denier 42-oz. neoprene base. A strip of neoprene covers the nylon, protecting it from UV and abrasions. Colored Pennel Orca® is glued on top to complete the patch. 2" D-Rings are stainless steel, and available in 6" or 8" patches. (8" patches are good for replacing D-Rings that have been removed because it covers the area of the old patch.)

How To: Inflatable Repair Adhesives Guide (4:16)

When repairing your Hypalon, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

I like the option of a bigger ring that would cover up an old factory ring.

FYI: Neptune Gray does not match Avon Gr

By Mike

Comments about NRS 2" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch:

Great D-ring and patch, works just fine.

I am replacing the plastic d-rings on my old (1980) Avon and I had hoped that "neptune gray" NRS d-rings would match the rubber of my old Avon, but it is quite a bit lighter. (See attached picture)

I just thought I'd comment here in case someone else had a similar question.

Comments about NRS 2" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch:

I've got an AB inflatable dinghy. The line with which we suspend it at the bow rubbed off the surface of the hypalon. I found the D-ring on the NRS website and ordered it.
It's been on for a while now. It looks like it came with the boat and is a handy place to attach things. (And I rearranged the lines so they don't rub.). It was easy to install. Just follow the instructions.

Comments about NRS 2" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch:

Extra D-rings on a raft is helpful in keeping gear organized. I also added D-rings at the bow and the stern so that I could raise the location of the lifeline around the perimeter of the boat. I like to keep the line higher up above the water. It is also a useful place to attach the bowline bag and rescue bag so that these do not drag in the water and have the opportunity to get snagged.

          • NRS 2" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch

            Q:

I need to replace a D-ring on an Achilles. The patch itself isn't torn--just the rubber extrusion that holds the metal ring. Do I have to completely remove the old patch, or can I cut off the extrusion, sand the surface down, and glue to new patch over the old one?

            Thanks

I would advise removing the old patch - with strong hair dryer or heat gun
and a little patience. This will provide much better "grounding" for the
replacement patch and D ring. Prepare surface as instructed by adhesive
product. NRS Hypalon glue worked very well for me - new oversized 6" D ring
& patch held for many years until boat sold.

              A:

Nancy, if the old patch is solidly attached you can glue the new one on top. If there's a concern about it's adhesion you'll want to remove it. Some heat, from a heat gun or hot hair dryer, can loosen the glue bond. Then the combination of heat, tugging, toluene solvent and mechanical scraping can remove the patch and the old glue.

I had the same issue. I cleaned up the old d-ring rubber as best I could by removing the rubber that protruded from the d-ring. I put the new d-ring over the top of the old. Seems to be holding well. Good luck!

The glue is separate, choose glue for the material you are attaching it to, hypalom, PVC , abs.

You need to buy it separately. I was able to glue 4 of them using 1/4 pint
of Clifton's hypalon glue and accelerant.

Brian, you'll also need to purchase adhesive. We recommend the combination of Clifton Hypalon Adhesive, Item # 38701.01, and Clifton Hypalon Accelerator, # 38702.01. It's what we use in our factory for applying these patches.

Very good product but does not include adhesive - the NRS-recommended
Clifton adhesive worked very well - see their instructions and follow
carefully for great results. Talk to their customer service reps about
              techniques.

Will the Pennel Orca D-ring work for an Avon Hypalon boat?
Asked on 12/6/2013 by Steve from Decatur, GA

              A:

Yes, Steve, it is totally compatible. Pennel Orca is "hypalon". This article explains why we no longer use that name in describing it - http://www.nrs.com/tech_talk/pennel_orca.asp - We recommend the combination of Clifton Hypalon Adhesive, Item # 38701.01, and Clifton Accelerator, Item # 38702.01, for applying it. This is the same combo we use in building our boats.
