When repairing your Hypalon, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

We attached 3 rings down each side of the funyak and then tied a rope down each side. This gives handles to carry the boat (when fully laden we have 2 people on each side - these D-rings are STRONG!) The ropes are also great handles for children to hang on to. We also tie gear through the D-rings for multi-day trips. They are an essential component of the funyak!

I used these as anchors for open canoe floatation. They are adequate for this service when secured with GFlex 650 after surface preparation precisely according to instructions.

The webbing is single - stitched into the patch, which is less than confidence - inspiring. The manufacturing quality control is unimpressive, insofar as the stitching inaccurately follows the margins of the embedded webbing, and the webbing and rings are not centered well within the circumference of the patches. All of that said, that seems to be pretty much what D-ring patches are nowadays. I would recommend this for the same use to friends with the reservations expressed in this review.

Comments about NRS 1" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch:

This was a replacement for a failed OEM D-Ring (albeit after 10 years). The NRS product looks a little more robust than the original; was everything as advertised; I trust it will stand up better than the original.

Comments about NRS 1" D-Ring Pennel Orca Patch:

I used four of these to equip my Dave Scadden fishing raft with a front seat. I have the 2 person model, but didn't like sitting on top of a cooler seat that was very unstable. These D-rings are top quality and were easy to install. Now all I have to do is clip my seat to the rings and off I go. Extremely secure and no more worry about falling out of the raft in fast water.

            Q:

I need to install optimal D-Ring patchs into Royalex canoe. NRS provides multiple options. Will they all adhere to Royalex or are some more applicable to PVC,Hypolon inflatables? TX for the assist.

              A:

The outer skin on Royalex is PVC (vinyl), so you'll need to use one of the PVC/urethane adhesives - Clifton Urethane, HH-66, Stabond or G-flex for the job. If you want to use this particular D-ring patch I'd suggest G-Flex Epoxy. We have a number of PVC material D-ring patches - http://www.nrs.com/category/2987/rafting/pvc-pu-parts-materials?ppg=all - If you have more questions, or we can help in any way, it'll be easier to help you by giving us a call, 800.635.5202. or dropping us a line, service@nrs.com.

unfortunately I do not have the chemical knowledge to answer this question. I suggest contacting manufacturer of your boat and asking them what adhesives are safe and then contacting NRS and asking them the same question about their patch materials

              A:

I put several of these on my RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) last year with mixed success. The patches adhered solidly to the tubes, except around the edges. I had a lot of trouble getting those to stay down and not curl up. It is important that you watch the videos on NRS’s product page about adhesive selection and use, and follow the recommendations exactly. Also—blue painter’s tape is your friend. :-) It is useful for holding the patches while you get the placement just right, and can mitigate overspill of the adhesive a little. It is good for holding the patch down while the adhesive cures, too, but then releases when you’re done with it.
As for whether you use Pennel Orca or PVC…remember that the synthetic rubber is usually only a thin layer on the outer surface of a neoprene and mesh sandwich. Inflatable boats generally come in two flavors, Hypalon (and it’s imitators, such as Pennel Orca, and I’m guessing Nitrilon), and PVC. What will actually be bonding is that thin layer of Nitrilon on the outer surface of your boat to the neoprene on the underside of the patch. So, the important thing about deciding which material is to match the rest of your boat; synthetic or PVC. The actual installation is dependent on getting the right adhesive for the material the patch will stick to— the Nitrilon on your boat.
              Hope this helps.

From what I read of Nitrilon, this D-ring patch should work well on your boat. We recommend the combo of Clifton Hypalon Adhesive, Item # 38701.01, and Clifton Hypalon Accelerator, # 38702.01, for attaching it. Instructions and videos are there on the product pages. Megs, they can be put on using Stabond Adhesive, Item # 38704.01, which will bond rubber materials (this D-ring has Hypalon coating on the outer surface and neoprene on the inner) to PVC. Other possibilities are the 1" Urethane, # 37300.01, and the 1" AIRE, # 37312.01. With those two I recommend using Clifton Urethane Adhesive, # 38700.01.

No, Vynabond adheres well to the PVC skin of Royalex, but not to Pennel Orca. G/flex Epoxy Adhesive, Item # 50201.01, will do a great job of bonding this D-ring to your canoes. Or, you can choose one of our PVC D-rings and use Vynabond or one of our other PVC-compatible adhesives - http://www.nrs.com/category/2987/rafting/pvc-pu-parts-materials

No, because it isn't PVC. It is much easier to bond PVC to PVC than other things like
Orca (hypalon) to PVC. It can be done, but the better solution would probably be to
find some PVC D ring patches, and use a good PVC-specific adhesive.
