How To: Inflatable Repair Adhesives Guide (4:16)

When repairing your Hypalon, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

    Q:

I want to secure a hydration system behind my seat. The bulkhead is fiberglass. Would this be the choice for D ring? And what would be the best adhesive to secure them? I'd use 4 points of contact.

      A:

These d-ring will work just fine. I'd recommend using G-Flex epoxy to adhere the d-rings to your boat.

    Q:

Can these be used on royalex canoes with Vyna Bond?
Asked on 4/29/2014 by TominVA from Stafford, VA

      A:

No, Vynabond adheres well to the PVC skin of Royalex, but not to Pennel Orca. G/flex Epoxy Adhesive, Item # 50201.01, will do a great job of bonding this D-ring to your canoes. Or, you can choose one of our PVC D-rings and use Vynabond or one of our other PVC-compatible adhesives - http://www.nrs.com/category/2987/rafting/pvc-pu-parts-materials

I have applied orca D-rings to my Aire Tributary 14 foot raft and my Aire Tomcat. None have failed and I have multiple tie down points for gear.

Rob, it's best to use one of the PVC D-rings you'll find at - http://www.nrs.com/category/2987/rafting/pvc-pu-parts-materials - Bond with Clifton Hypalon Adhesive, Item # 38700.01.

      A:

No, because it isn't PVC. It is much easier to bond PVC to PVC than other things like
Orca (hypalon) to PVC. It can be done, but the better solution would probably be to
find some PVC D ring patches, and use a good PVC-specific adhesive.

Jeff, I think you'll like the new SUP Board D-Ring Patches for your Earl - Item # 86107.01. Put them on with Clifton Urethane Adhesive, # 38700.01.

I have an Aire Lynx 1 and an Aire Outfitter 2. Which is the best D-ring to use for either of these boats? I believe they are both PVC material. Thanks.

      A:

Brian, you are correct that your boats are PVC. We carry an AIRE 1" PVC D-ring, Item # 37312.01. I suggest you use Clifton Urethane Adhesive, Item # 38700.01. MEK, Item # 38752.01, is the best solvent. Other PVC repair materials are here - http://www.nrs.com/category/2987/rafting/pvc-pu-parts-materials

The PIke IK D-Ring Patch (#16366), !" PVC Dry Bag D-Ring Patch (#2097) or 1" Urethane D-Ring Patch (#16181) would be better choices. I recommend Clifton Urethane Adhesive (#1901).

      A:

Pennel Orca® D-Ring is a hypalon type material.
The bond with urethane, nylon, or PVC would be questionable at best.
I don't know of any adhesive that would provide a stable bond with these materials.

      A:

Stabond can be used to glue Hypalon to PVC. However, we suggest you choose one of the PVC D-rings on page - http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product_list.asp?deptid=1080 - and use Clifton Urethane Adhesive.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

Orca is hypalon. Hypalon does not bond well to PVC. It is chemically very inert, has
a very high melting point, and cannot be "welded".
NRS sells a number of PVC D-ring patches. You should use one of those and PVC cement.
