How To: Find and Fix Inflatable Boat Valve Leaks (3:23)

Finding and fixing leaks in the valves on your inflatable raft, cataraft or inflatable kayak (IK) is an important skill for boaters. Here NRS repair guru Josh Gile demonstrates the steps with a Leafield C-7 inflate/deflate valve. You'll use basically the same steps with other types -- Leafield B-7, Halkey-Roberts, Summit and military valves.

Comments about Halkey-Roberts Valve Wrench:

This is a tool we use often in our repair facility. Usually it is a plastic tube with feeble studs that break far too frequently. I received a call from a very pleasant CSR who told me that NSR was out of the plastic tools we ordered but would I like one in steel? It was already above-and-beyond for the call to be made (really? a phone call for such a small order?) but to have a better option to suggest? That was great.

      Comments about Halkey-Roberts Valve Wrench:

Wrench worked on the first valve after some struggling but broke after that one. It is very difficult to use without a wrench or vice-grips for leverage and that will depend on how your valves were fastened. Tabs broke on 2nd use making it useless. I guess I'll have to get the metal one but that seems likely to break the internal plastic spines. Halkey valves are one of engineering's embarrassments.

        Comments about Halkey-Roberts Valve Wrench:

I purchased the PVC version first.
        Don't waste your time. .....
I ended up having to drill a hole though the body of the wrench to get the leverage I needed.
it would be nice if they came pre drilled. Well worth whatever extra expense that would add to the price.

        Comments about Halkey-Roberts Valve Wrench:

This tool broke the first time I used it. Not even worth the price of postage to return. I appreciate the effort to create a cheap tool for simple use, but...this one just doesn't work. Better to invest an extra $20 for a steel tool.
