Finding and fixing leaks in the valves on your inflatable raft, cataraft or inflatable kayak (IK) is an important skill for boaters. Here NRS repair guru Josh Gile demonstrates the steps with a Leafield C-7 inflate/deflate valve. You'll use basically the same steps with other types -- Leafield B-7, Halkey-Roberts, Summit and military valves.

broke the prongs off in the first use.

Comments about Halkey-Roberts Metal Valve Wrench Tool:

would not recommend this aluminum model, much less the plastic one they also make. had to fabricate my own out of steel, but what worked best was a pipe wrench--you can get a grip on the outside edge under full pressure and spin it off effortlessly. good luck!

I had the same tool made from PVC and it broke when I tried to remove the valve. It only took a minute to remove the valve with this tool.

Comments about Halkey-Roberts Metal Valve Wrench Tool:

I'm amazed that this wrench is made withoout any way to turn it. I drilled a 5/16" hole in the end of the wrench so that I could put a solid steel rod through it to get some serious leversge. Then it was fine, although I couldn't get the valve to unscrew no matter how much force I used. I was warned by the experts that getting an H-R valve out isn't easy. They were right.

              Q:

I AM LOOKING FOR A VALVE WRENCH TO FIT A SIX SPOKE PUSH-PUSH TYPE VALVE ON AN OLDER SCANDEN FRAMELESS RAFT. The Valve's overall diameter is 2 3/8". The wrench must fit within a 1 1/8 inch diameter outside diameter inner ring. Will this work? Thanks.

                Hi mark -
I know very little about Halkey-Roberts Valves... this wrench works on my
float tube valve very well - which is over 20yrs old (it is an old
woodriver float tube if you're familiar with float tubes).
What I can tell you - is I mic'd the OD of the valve wrench - it
measures1.22" or 31.02mm on the WRENCH part of the tool, which is turned
down slightly from the OD of the raw piece of aluminum tubing it was
machined out of. The ID of the wrench portion of the tool - mics out at
                1.047" or 26.80mm
Hope that makes sense.... feel free to ask any other questions & I'll do my
                best to answer

I believe Dave Scadden used all Halkey Roberts valves. So this would be the
right tool for the job. This tool will also work on H3 (knock off HR
valves) valves as well. Good luck!

The spanners are universal for the old and new H-K valve. I'd recommend getting the metal spanner (#14742) as some of the valves are in tight. You may need to drill a hole thru the handle of the spanner so you can insert a screwdriver for extra leverage.
Difference between the old and new HK valves is related to the depth of the recess (old is 5/8", new is 7/8"), but this is unrelated to the spanner needed as the valve internal diameter is the same. The spanner will grip both the old rounded valve holes and the new square holes.
