  • NRS Women's HydroSkin 0.5 Long-Sleeve Shirt

    Q:

I am looking for something to put on over a swimsuit for a 30 min. swim in mid 60 water. Right now I go without and am a little chilly. I am looking for a long sleeve shirt, any suggestions?

      A:

Many people use HydroSkin for swimming; it provides quite a bit of warmth. If you're swimming in a chlorinated pool, be sure to thoroughly rinse the shirt in fresh water after each session. Chlorine will damage the neoprene.

    Q:

I plan to use this to SUP in a lake with temperatures about 56-60F. Which level of warmth would be best (.05, 1.0, 1.5). I am new to the sport so may fall in more than experienced paddlers.

      I have the 0.5.
It depends. If you are talking about water temperature 56 - 60 but a bright sunny day with air temp 80 degrees, the 0.5 is perfect. If you are talking about cloudy days with air temp 70, consider the 1.0.
I live in Charleston SC and SUP in the ocean. I wear a shorty wet suit if air/water temperatures both are in the 60s.

Emily, Hydroskin 0.5 will work for that temperature water. Being that the Hydroskin 1.0 is a black neoprene, it will absorb more solar radiation which keeps you warmer. My thoughts are you can always jump in if you are too hot.

      A:

Hi Emily- Hope this helps. Our water temps are exactly the same as yours.
SUP paddling is extended arm motions, so the thicker the HydroSkin or
wetsuit material the more resistance there will be on every arm
stroke/extension. I think that's important (from experience). When you
fall and remount the SUP, your knees and shins can take a beating, so the
suggestion would be to go thinner on the HydroSkin top (0.5 or 1.0) and
consider an NRS sleeveless wetsuit "farmer Jane" (2-3 mm) or a neoprene
vest to wear over the skin to keep your core warm. Combo will keep you
comfortable, protect the knees when climbing aboard, and allow unrestricted
arm movement. Plus you can wear the skin alone on hot days or as you
      progress.
Have a fun and safe summer paddling! Here's the link to the NRS website
      for the farmer Jane wetsuit-

This is a difficult question. If you are exerting yourself and your body is
out of the water, the hydroskin will make you very warm and sweaty. I would
go armed with multiple layers for quick and easy off and on, also so you
will have extra in a dry bag in event of unexpected cold or persistent
rain. The thickness of one layer shouldn't matter too much, but the
hydroskin is good for close to your body since it fits snug and conforms to
      your body.

Wore rafting down the middle Salmon and I stayed pretty comfortable. Temps there are much colder. I think it would work fine for lake temps 56-60. I would rate the warmth at a 1.0.

Although hydroskin is designed to stay warm if it gets wet, it is very warm
when it's dry. On a cold day, it's an excellent choice even if you have a
      dry suit on.

Kay, most drytops have breathable material. The neoprene in HydroSkin is not breathable. So, on the upper body wearing breathable fabrics like H2Core and fleece is a better choice. On the lower body, where you don't sweat as much, HydroSkin could work fine.

It is usually meant to be worn alone, and not under a drysuit/top/pants. Great as a warming layer on cooler days. Best option for under drygear is a light (or mid) weight fleece. It’s easy to get hot - even on very cold days - in drygear. Fleece stretches well and gives best range of motion under drygear too. I’d only wear hydroskin under my drygear if I were going on a seriously cold trip (think creeking or sea kayaking in near-frozen water with few timely warming options).

Yes. However, remember that chlorine damages neoprene. Rinse your HydroSkin with fresh water after each pool session to flush out the chlorine. Then air dry your your HS.

Comments about NRS Women's HydroSkin 0.5 Long-Sleeve Shirt:

Very comfortable! I was afraid the neck would be too tight, after reading some of the reviews. I'm happy to say that I can even get out of this shirt by myself! It's snug, but not choklingly so. Nice color combos, too. I got the pink/magenta. Would love to see a purple or blue combination. If this comes in a short-sleeve model, I will likely buy that one before next boating season, too.

Comments about NRS Women's HydroSkin 0.5 Long-Sleeve Shirt:

Love the colors and quality- dislike the fit. I am 5'7", 126 pounds. My husband bought large in pants and top for my birthday. I felt bad because even after reordering XXL, the neck and underarm felt very constricting- chocking. I will keep the pants but be prepared for VERY low rise. We finally had to swap. I took his men's XL shirt and he reordered men's XXL. HE IS ONLY 5'8" and muscular. I NEVER write bad reviews, but this line of clothing is ridiculous and just too much trouble. He bought the purple haze to match my helmet. Since we had to swap, I now have masculine looking blue shirt with my beautiful pink helmet. SO DISAPPOINTED!!!
