Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin 1.5 Shirt:

Appears to be great quality and materials. Will fit you great if you're shaped like a pear. If your shoulders and chest are larger than your belly, find another garment. I'm 6'5" 200lbs, athletic build, but not bulky (built like a runner). Size chart said XXL. But XXL is tight in the neck (I have a 16.5 inch neck), the shoulders and arms were very tight, but the mid section was very baggy.

Also, the side zipper does not anchor closed. I had the shirt on for about 3 minutes while trying it on, and just the little bit of moving around I did in that time started working the zipper open. So I would have zero confidence that the zipper would STAY closed if I were in my kayak or raft for a few hours or a day. If I had a belly putting tension on it, it would probably not stay closed at all.

Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin 1.5 Shirt:

I use this 1.5 top for paddling in cold water. The top does not fit well. I'm an average build size medium person, but the top is loose in the abdomen. The collar needs to be redesigned. I understand it needs to fit tight, but it shouldn't feel like a rope around my neck. Make the sealing area wider. The arm and shoulder areas fit well.

I have a farmer john 2mm wetsuit. Are HydroSkins (.5 - 1.5) worn under or over wetsuits?

I wear my Hydroskin over the farmer John, but I suppose it work work under as well. Whichever feels like it gives you the most movement.

It works either way. I wear mine over as you get better water shedding but try it both ways and do what you find most comfortable.

              A:

I wear 0.5 to 1.5 mm HydroSkin tops and bottoms (long or short) either in place of a wetsuit or under my dry top depending on conditions. Under my HydroSkin I wear a thin rash guard and under short. I stopped wearing wet suits long ago in place of HydroSkin since the design is tailored to paddling.

HydroSkin can be worn either over or under your wetsuit. Often a shirt will be worn under and a jacket worn over.

            Q:

I wear 16 1/2 shirt neck size. Wetsuits sometimes squeeze my neck when I am not immersed. I plan to use HydroSkin for sea kayaking. I plan to stay dry most of the time. How stretchy is the neck? Is the HydroSkin 1.0 significantly more stretchy than 1.5? Thanks.

I have the new .5 and the new 1.5. I use the 1.5 with a 3mm farmer John in 40 degree waters on Lake Michigan, and the .5 with 1mm shorts and/or pants on cooler windy summer conditions. Both are comfortable for long paddles, but will leave you warm and sweaty. Neck comfort, and overall fit, are better than older models that I have used. I especially like the longer body length when paddling my surfski, really keeps my lower core warm. Good Paddling

Scott, the HydroSkin 1.0 is significantly stretchier than the 1.5. However, the neck sizes are pretty generous. Our returns and exchanges are easy and free, if you need it.

I am going to boundary waters in early May and the water is still very cold 40 degrees or so. Is this shirt going to be a good choice if the canoe tips over?

Andro, that depends on what else you'll be wearing, how long you would be in the water, etc, etc. This shirt will be great in a layering system, but you'll need to consider the questions you'll find in this article - http://www.nrs.com/safety_tips/coldwatergear.asp - Read it over and give us a call, 800.635.5202; we'll help you get outfitted for your trip.
