How To: Patch a Hypalon Boat (5:09)

Properly patching a Hypalon raft or cataraft isn't difficult, but it does require specific tools, supplies and techniques. In this instructional video, the NRS Repairs Department shows you the materials, adhesives, solvents and skills you need to successfully glue a patch on your inflatable boat. This information applies to Hypalon, Pennel Orca and rubber inflatables. The same techniques can be used for gluing air-holding patches, D-rings and foot cups to your raft or cataraft. The video also includes tips for making temporary field repairs on the water.

How To: Inflatable Repair Adhesives Guide (4:16)

When repairing your Hypalon, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

    Comments about Shore Adhesive:

I used it on an 18" patch in the floor of my raft. It worked well and held up over a 4 hour white water trip with plenty of rock rubbing. Follow the directions or you will have some problems. round all your edges and have all the tools and materials ready b4 you start. use chalk to outline the pacth so you know where to add the adhesive.

          Comments about Shore Adhesive:

The adhesive works well. My complaint is that the can comes in a can with a plastic ring on the top. The ring can not be pulled off by hand and can not be taken off with a paint can lid remover. You have to pry it off with a screwdriver (as i was told by the NRS rep). But, when you go to pry it off with a screwdriver, the thick plastic is stronger than the weak aluminum in the can. So in my case the screwdriver went right through a piece of the can before the plastic ring would come off. This ruins the airtight seal on the can.

                • Shore Adhesive

                  Q:

What is the difference between Shore Adhesive and Clifton Hypalon Adhesive?

Are they the same thing? If not, what are the advantages/disadvantages to each glue? Also, can you use the accelerator with Shore Adhesive, and does it provide the bonding advantage as stated with the Hypalon Adhesive?

                  Thanks!

                    A:

Nate, Shore and Clifton Hypalon are both good one-part adhesives. The Accelerator only works with Clifton Hypalon. When making air holding or high-stress repairs we recommend the CH + Accelerator combo; it's what we use to build NRS Pennel Orca (hypalon) boats.

                  Q:

What is the difference between your FA4844 adhesives and FA1065? Could they both be used as a one part glue for patching inflatable rafts?

                    A:

Both of the adhesives are great one-part adhesives. If you want a stronger bond and a faster cure time you can mix FA4844 with Clifton Hypalon Accelerator. The Accelerator does not work with FA1065.
