    Q:

Would this helmet work for riding in a side-by-side ATV? I want a helmet, but nothing heavy or hot.

      A:

      Hi Ellie,
Your question had me confused for a while, as I could see myself thinking of doing the same thing, but I don't believe it would 'officially' work as a helmet for an ATV at all. Your reason for wanting to use this helmet is a key in the reason, as I personally don't think it is solid enough/heavy enough/strong enough to withstand the impacts of any collision/accident that may happen on an ATV. I know I would want to use it as well, as it would save me a lot of money, but my kayak helmet would not be something I would trust to my children to use on their motorcycles.
Good luck and be careful, whatever you decide,

I certainly wouldn't recommend it. The helmet is completely different from
any motorsport helmet I've ever used. It has a soft foam interior and hard
but flexible exterior only designed for low speed impact in the river. I
wouldn't even trust it on a bicycle.

I guess some thing is better than nothing. But: when you are in are in
a raft or kayak going down a river you are not traveling at 35mph. The
people who do big waterfall drops may hit speeds of 35 or more depending
on the drop but the helmets they wear are more like motor cycle helmets
than a standard WW helmet. I hear of people wearing non DOT approved
motor cycle helmets getting killed or sustaining brain injury for more
than people who wear the DOT approved helmets. Non DOT rated helmets
are glamor wear. You can buy them at shops or on line. The bottom line
is a WW helmet is not a motor sports helmet. If you hit a tree head on
with this helmet at 35mph, it will split in half. You may die anyway if
wearing a DOT rated helmet but your brains will not be splattered all
      over the place.

The NRS Chaos Helmet is intended to be used for whitewater boating. While some head protection is better than no head protection, I wouldn’t recommend a whitewater boating helmet for ATV use. What I would recommend is buying a helmet intended to be used for ATV use. Your head will thank you.

The padding is rather dense for impacts received from water sports. Don’t think this helmet would adequately protect you in an ATV crash.

I do not believe the helmet is rated for motor vehicle use. Primary use is intended for white water rafting where the user may get struck by an oar as a raft over turns or is pulled on by a rock or nearby oar in the case an oarsman does not ship oars timely. Forces in ATVs can be more extreme and warrant helmets designed for motor vehicle use. Don't get a false sense of security because there is a roll cage, significant forces exist in any type of motor vehicle use. I ride ATV and side by sides and always insist on DOT approved helmets for myself and my kids.
      Happy trails.

How much does it weight ? There is any extra accessory for chin´s proteccion ?

      A:

There is no extra accessory for the chin strap, but the strap material
itself is pretty soft, and it fits snugly under the jaw, so I never had a
problem with the strap rubbing. Regarding weight, I couldn't tell you how
many grams or ounces, but it didn't feel especially heavy or light for a
helmet of that size and protection, which is to say, fairly light,
considering that it's plastic and foam for the most part.

It weighs 18 ounces, 510 grams. It has a webbing chin strap that secures with a side-pinch buckle.

It's very light. Almost don't notice it there. I would have to pull it out
and weigh the thing, but it's weight is negligible. No extra chin
protection. Just a strap under your chin, although you could probably
fashion something if it's of concern. Works fine for me as is. Hope this
      helps.

There's not a lot of weight to it. Its a very conferable helmet. There are no extra chin parts. There a removable ear covers.

Three of us needed a light weight adjustable helmet to share. Using the sizing chart the Large was ordered. At first the helmet seemed to be not comfortable and tight. But, once we got in the water and used it, we are all pleased. The price was what we wanted spend and the crashes have been safer. The hydrofoil hit has the back of the helmet and the helmet did its job. Now we can't wait to get back on the water.

Unfortunately, this is the first NRS product I have not been happy with. The rivet on the ear pad failed and came apart. NRS gladly exchanged it, but the same thing happened again. I'm not convinced the 3rd time would be the charm. Also, the sizing chart recommended I get an extra large. Even with the adjustments fully extended the helmet felt too tight. I can only image a killer headache at the end of day. I'm a commercial guide on the South Fork of the American and need to be able to depend on my equipment.

It is a great beginner helmet if you are a new boater however, I think for longer paddle trips, it should have a little softer padding in the front on the forehead area. Otherwise it;s a good helmet.

Comments about NRS Chaos Helmet - Side Cut - Closeout:

I purchased this helmet for year round WW Rafting in the NW. The helmet looks nice, color and styling is cool( flat black). I have a giant head so the option for the XL was nice and the helmet does fit properly. The drawbacks are the snap in ear pieces and the adjustable back strap. Ear flaps fall out way too easily and the neoprene back strap pad was lost immediately on the river. But at a close out price there isn't much to complain about this helmet.
