Extra D-rings provide more gear tie-down options, and footcups give you greater paddling control. NRS Repairs demonstrates the steps for gluing them so they stay permanently in place.

  • NRS 2" PVC Canoe D-Ring Patch

    Q:

I have a PVC party island that I want to add an additional anchor point - only came with one. Would this work for that application?

I should imagine so - I have only used these for anchoring air bags in my
canoes. They have been in place or year or so and have held well.
Make sure your rough up the surfaces you are going to bond prior to
application of adhesive. Once stuck in place weight the patch and leave for
      24 hrs.

Mike, this is a quality D-ring patch. If installed properly it will take quite a bit of load. We recommend Clifton Urethane Adhesive, Item # 38700.01, for gluing it on. There are links to gluing instructions and video there under More Information on the product page.

    Q:

Could these be installed as cooler/seat tie downs on a fiberglass drift boat? I could easily remove paint/finish to get down to bare fiberglass. What adhesive would you recommend?

You should be able to glue them down to a fiberglass surface . See this discussion thread link for suggestions from others that have had sucess: http://www.paddling.net/message/showThread.html?fid=advice&tid=1638346

I have had success fastening these with both contact cement and marine epoxy (west system), as long as the surface is scuffed and cleaned well. Contact cement is easier to come by, and may be your best bet.

I glued these to the bottom of my Royalex canoe and they work great as
tie-downs for my chuckbox and other accessories. I have not flipped (yet),
so I do not know how well they would do under a lot of hydraulic force.
However, I installed them based on a friends advice who used them in his
      canoes with NOLS.
I used "Vyna Bond" glue for adhesive (google it). Anyway, just clean the
surface well, swab on the adhesive, and place where you want them. No need
to get down to raw fiberglass. I do not hold back when I attach cam straps
and they have never come loose or needed to be re-glued.
      Cheers,
      Jason

Steve, you can stick any of the D-rings we carry to fiberglass with G/flex 655 Epoxy, Item # 50215.01. In the More Information section there on the product page, click on "G/flex 655-8 Instructions" for application info. And this article - http://www.westsystem.com/ss/assets/gflex/D-ringPadsGflex.pdf - goes into the adhesion to our D-ring patches. One consideration is that G/flex isn't a contact adhesive so the patch has to be clamped or weighed in place while it cures. Give us a call, 800.635.5202, with any questions.

    Q:

I was going to add some D-ring patches and cleaned the area's with MEK, this is on an inflatable made of PVC material. The MEK cleaned it up so nicely and brought the coler and shine back so good, I was wondering if its safe to wipe the whole inflatabe down with MEK.

Sorry I don't have any experience with the MEK. I used the D-ring patches and they held up well.

I don't know about the MEK cleaner.
I do use the D-rings on my white water canoe and love them.
What do you use to use the D-rings to the PVC? Contact cement did not work for me.

      A:

Larry, MEK is an effective cleaner for patching PVC material, but it must be used carefully. MEK can dissolve PVC. Many adhesives for patching PVC contain MEK; they work by softening the PVC coating on boat and patch, so that when rolled together the two layers meld together. If you do use it to clean your boat, use it very carefully and lightly. Personally, I'd try using something like Inflatable Boat Cleaner, Item # 38753.01.

If glued properly these patches will be plenty strong for your thigh straps. Consider using G/flex Epoxy, Item # 2272, for attaching them.

These worked great for me for installing some thigh straps. I have plastic
boat and used Vynabond (pay attention to instructions, less is more) and
they are holding strong. Make sure to get good contact under the center of
the patch or the stitching is, and make sure there are NO air pockets. If
you don't get it to bond the first time, use some MEK and start over. Worth
the hassle long term. I would also make sure to set them fairly wide so the
rings are getting more of a laterall pull as opposed to straight up and
down, straps should be coming off the attachments at about a 45 degree angle
when over your thighs. Pay attention to how the D ring is contacting in
curves in your boat as well.
      Good Luck
