Comments about NRS Youth KidSkin Jacket:

This jacket is EXACTLY what we wanted! I'm so glad my sister-in-law suggested I try NRS! My daughter's school built a new indoor pool and they keep the water at 80 degrees. Not freezing by any means but just in case I wanted to buy her a thin neoprene swim jacket so she would be warm enough to jump right in! I also wanted zip front since she needs to manage undressing her wet clothes on her own in the locker room after class (she's 8 years old). This jacket is the perfect thickness, very well made and fits perfectly! She has not complained about it riding up nor have I noticed that it does when I watch her swim. I wasn't thrilled with the black color at first (my daughter usually wears pink!) but it looks nice and professional. She will also wear this jacket in the lake over the summer which is typically colder than her 80 degree pool!

Our 8 yr old used to complain all the time that she was cold when we went rafting. So we bought this with a pair of the hydro skin bottoms. She is completely different now, she is the always trying to get on the side of the boat the slashes are coming in. It has really been fun to watch how much more she enjoys the trips. It has everything to do with her staying warm. She is no longer afraid of getting wet. Now we are buying another pair for our 6 yr old.

Comments about NRS Youth KidSkin Jacket:

Purchased this for my 8 year old who is tall and very thin and usually has big temperature fluctuations due to the lack of fat on her body. This has been the first summer rafting that she hasn't complained about getting cold, even on cold water rivers. Also, purchased this with the pants which made it great so that she could take off or put on the jacket whether she was warm or cold.

It's a tiny bit stiff much like a wetsuit. My daughter did not stay warm
                    but it helped.

Yes this jacket is thick and would say probably not designed for lap pool swimming . This is more designed for trapping the water once you get wet in between the suit and your body for warmth .

I would say yes it will restrict movement some, but slowing down performance (zipper) would be my first concern. My daughter uses hers for just sitting around on rafts or boats where some spray is involved. Or just floating/swimming around in cooler water. I like the zipper version 'cause it is easy to get in and out of. It's a great product. I believe there is a similar item without the zipper which may cause less drag. Maybe that level of performance isn't a concern at this point though. I'm sure there are some "skins" out there specific for swimming.
We love our kidskin jacket. So far so good for the short time she's had it.

I think so yes. I’m a huge fan of this jacket and it’s great for my 7 year old. Based on how the neoprene bunches at the shoulders, I don’t think this would work. NRS products are awesome for boating and I don’t know this one will translate.
I think something designed for surfing (cold water expected and shoulder rotation required) will go a lot further. I have a 1.5mm neoprene top that I wear and it’s awesome for swimming. I did a quick google search for “neoprene surf jacket girls” and got a lot of options Here is just one

I would not recommend this jacket for swim team. It is more ideal for playing in the water and not swimming laps. We purchased this for rafting and are very happy with its ability to get on and off.

it might. My son wears it for sailing. One thing to consider is that the zipper might freeze up.

We have a medium jacket that fits our 10 yr old girl very well. She is 51", about 50lbs and thin. Previously we had the small when she was younger. We've passed that one on to another family. This is a great product, the front zipper makes it easy to get on and off kids.

As with any wetsuit-type garment you want it to fit snug to minimize water entry. The critical measurement will be chest/torso circumference. These measurements are for a snug, but not tight fit in that area: Small - 24", Medium - 25.5", Large - 27". The KidSkin material is very stretchy so you'll get another couple of inches on each size. You can order a couple of sizes and return one - returns/exchanges are easy and free.

Heidi, weight is usually the best tiebreaker for wetsuit-type garments. I think the Y-XS will fit more snugly. What I suggest is purchasing both that and the Y-S, and keeping the one that fits best. Returns are easy and free.
