I live and boat in the San Juan Islands, and rely on my boat for transportation. I needed gloves that would keep my hands warm in the wind and rain, yet be flexible and lightweight enough to easily handle lines and controls. I also am a petite woman and most gloves are too large in the palm or have finger lengths that are way too long. The XS in these fit my palm quite nicely (I started with the S based on the sizing instructions) and the fingers are only a shade too long. I am able to use them in the above conditions, and they keep my hands fairly warm. An improvement would be to reverse the position of the Velcro wrist straps. The "tooth" part of the Velcro is largely exposed and snags many fabrics.

So far as I can tell, they're built well, but with a straight kayak paddle, I can't seem to keep my blade straight without paying attention like I can with bare hands. If you use a paddle that provides orientation (bend shaft, T grip, or similar), these are great. If not, stay away.

They also soak up quite a bit of water, and so once wet in cooler/cold conditions, your hands are warmer without the gloves.

these gloves dont seem to be pulling apart - used them probably 40 times this year. Not the warmest but they're not advertised as such. I like them a lot.

Great fit, keep my fingers and hands dry and warm in the cool waters I kayak in winter and spring. Velcro strap keeps the fit tight. The fingers are maneuverable so I can snap and unsnap ties without taking them off. I should have gotten these many winters ago!

Ok, I know NRS does not say these are waterproof, but I feel into the trap of taking reviews literally and some reviews can mislead you and I don't want you to fall into the same trap.

Love the padding on the inside/thumb ... perfect for canoeing and I think they will last a long time. Most of my gloves have worn thin due on the control hand or grip due to the rotation of the paddle. Grip is perfect ... not too 'grippy' and yet very durable. Thanks NRS!

I think you'll be fine in the XL. Exchanges are easy and free. If you're in a hurry, order both and send one back.
