  • NRS Lower Salmon Sun Hat

    Q:

What is the UPF factor for this hat? Will sun pass through the mesh areas?
Asked on 3/10/2013 by Carol from United States

      A:

Carol, while the material doesn't have a specific UPF rating, the non-mesh parts of the hat will totally block the sun's rays. While the holes in the mesh are relatively small, some rays can penetrate through them.

      A:

Yes, the sun will pass through. However, I have worn it all day in the sun
and never been burned. I wouldn't want it without the cooling factor that
the mesh provides. I like this hat so much a bought another one for my son.

      A:

In my experience the mesh areas filter the sun enough that the skin on my
head doesn't get burnt. My head burns easily and with this hat I haven't
      had any problems.

Comments about NRS Lower Salmon Sun Hat:

The Lower Salmon Sun Hat is so useful in bright sun that I use it all year round here in MidCoast Maine. Only the winter cold forces me into a warmer piece of head gear. The main advantages of the hat is that it does a very good job of protecting my head from the intense radiant heat of a sunny day and shields my eyes from glare. As someone who is susceptible to three kinds of skin cancer I really appreciate the shade it provides.

An unexpected benefit is that the brim doesn't blow down into my face when paddling or hiking into winds up to about 15 mph. I am not sure why, as many sun hats that are more expensive than this do precisely that. There is a fold in the brim on my hat just above the eyes, perhaps an accidental one by NRS, that seems to help in this regard.

I use the hat when out in the sun all year for paddling, hiking and shooting. The only time I don't wear it is when I don't need protection from bright sunlight or when the weather is so cold I need something warmer, as indicated above.

Comments about NRS Lower Salmon Sun Hat:

I recently wore the Lower Salmon Sun Hat during a 10 paddling/fishing trip in Quetico Provincial Park in Northwest Ontario. The hat fit well and protected my head and ears well. The bugs were particularly vicious this year, Blackflies out in July!!, so I kinda wish the underside of the brim was maybe just a darker shade of khaki instead of black. Those biting insects really like dark colors and blackflies natrually gravitate towards your head anyway.

Comments about NRS Lower Salmon Sun Hat:

I really like this hat. Lightweight and breathes. Something you need when working in the sun. The wind won't take it off with the convienent draw cord. Folds it up and pack in your bag if you are going away. Very nice feature. I am a skin cancer survivor and this is great protection, especially the ears. A great buy.
