Comments about NRS Women's Endurance Jacket:

Over 40 years of whitewater rafting -- why did I wait so long to get this fabulous splash jacket? Easy to put on and take off, lightweight but does the job. With the biggest waves in the most intense rapids, the jacket did admit water up the sleeves and down my neck, but not much. I am 5 ft 8 inches, 150 pounds, and have long arms. I chose women's Large so I could fit warm layers under. It was perfect for me. Dries quickly and stores small. So much better than a rain jacket or wetsuit.

              Q:

I do a lot of whitewater rafting and I am always cold and wet. Would this be a good jacket to wear over other layers? If so what do you suggest wearing underneath to keep warm and dry? Also what size...I weight 149, chest 36, and I'm 5 feet 4 inches.

                I'm about your size (5'4" and 135), and I ordered a large because a) I want
a bunch of stuff to fit under and b ) I can't stand to be confined. I like
the fit. It's a splash jacket, so not impossible for water to get in, but
in general very dry, and it works well as a wind-breaker, so I'd just wear
whatever keeps you warm underneath, making sure the bottom of the jacket
covers the bottom of whatever is under it.

Jennifer, it's no fun being cold when doing something fun. The Endurance is a splash jacket, so it'll shed spray and rain, but if you go for a swim your underlayers will get wet. The neck and wrist cuffs fit snug, aren't as watertight as latex gaskets but are more all-day comfortable. If there's not much risk of dunking, fleece and other synthetic layers are fine underneath. Or, wetsuit and HydroSkin layers will provide warmth even if you do end up in the drink. A lot depends on how cold the water and weather is. You're on the upper end of the weight and chest for a Medium; but the jacket is cut generously for layering. If you find you need the Large, exchanges are easy and free.

                Hi I'm 5ft 3in chest 36 &130 lbs...I've only purchased this jacket this
summer before week long island to island trip in July so it was warm
weather yet not real warm as it was upper Maine coast. perfect (wind
rain), and really liked neck & wrist gaskets as I thought I might not like
the neck one. Other than long johns or fleece vest I think my arms would
feel too restricted in the size I have to put anything else under it.
Unfortunately , my life was has been too busy for any trips past early
fall.. Though were I have Raynaud;s abd am always cold/wet I would think
another time of a wetsuit. or something neoprene for warmth..( like the
                booties/gloves)..
Hoping for an early spring and more free time this year. sorry couldn't
                help you.
                Happy paddling!

I bought a medium women’s Endurance jacket last spring. I’m 5 feet 5-1/2 inches, 132 lbs, and chest 36. The jacket fits me well, layered with a lightweight synthetic undershirt and a heavy fleece. I get VERY cold on rivers and need as many layers as possible. (I am a rafter, not a kayaker.) I suggest you order a large so you can layer or even consider an extra large - try both with your fleece layers. The neck and cuffs snug down to keep you warm and dry. I still haven’t figured out how to keep my feet warm!

Hi there. I do a lot of class 4 and 5 whitewater rafting, sometimes in
very cold water, and I am also prone to getting cold. I use the NRS
endurance paddle jacket and love it. My boyfriend is a professional raft
guide/kayaker and he uses a similar jacket. Also, the company that I
usually go rafting with supplies similar splash jackets to guests, and
others seem to be very comfortable wearing these. I am 5'6", chest 34,
130 lbs and I wear a small. I probably could get away with an extra small
but think the small is the most appropriate for me. It doesn't need to be
super fitted b/c it has adjustable neck and waist closures.
As for what to wear underneath, depending on how hot it is outside, and on
the temperature of the water, I usually do a variety of layers. On a
particularly cold day and/or in cold water I use an NRS sleeveless wetsuit
and layer a quick-drying long-sleeve shirt underneath. My typical choice
is a long sleeve Smart Wool shirt (they come in a variety from lightweight
to fairly heavy weight). (Some of my friends even wear smart wool pants
under their wetsuits, but I have a very warm wetsuit so it is usually
sufficient for keeping my bottom half warm). Capilene is also a good
material. Both the wool and capilene dry quickly, but I prefer wool b/c it
seems to take on less "river odor." Stay away from cotton layers b/c
cotton doesn't dry quickly. On a cold day in cold water, I have worn up to
3 smart wool shirts underneath the paddle jacket and have been completely
comfortable and warm. You can always pack an extra long-sleeve shirt in a
little dry bag and then layer accordingly once you are on the water. Also,
I always wear wool socks when in cold water.
Hope this helps! I highly recommend this NRS paddle jacket. Not that it
matters, but an added bonus is that the blue is a beautiful color! :)

In addition to what I said earlier, there is Velcro on this jacket, although
it is not listed separately on the label; therefore, I assume it comes under
the heading of 100% nylon or 100% neoprene. A quick google search of Velcro
did not seem to indicate it contains latex.

The label says the garment is 100% nylon, and the trim is 100% neoprene. I
looked up both on the internet, and neither contains any latex. Since I
don't have the allergy myself, I can't help you further than that. I trust
the label because I trust NRS.
