  • NRS Stampede Shorty Play Jacket - Closeout

    Q:

Trying to decide between the shorty and longsleeve, Just wondering what temps this could work in. I feel like the longsleeve could be too warm in 60 degree weather, really unsure wondering if some users can tell me when they used it. Also sizing, I have a medium payette jacket, would the sizing be the same. Thanks!

I have a longsleeve Kokatat drytop with latex gaskets and the Stampede Shorty top with the neoprene gaskets also. I paddle in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. I use the longsleeve the most but I do paddle right through the winter. Its April and the air temps are in the 50s and 60s but the water temps are still around 40s so the long sleeve gets used with a light layer underneath. I'm paddlingwhite water and get splashed alot and roll sometimes and this keeps me cool even when the air temp is a bit higher. The shorty top comes out when the air temp is hot but the water still cold like a dam release from the bottom say 80 degress but the water is 40, if the water gets above 55 and the air temp is above 80 then it is poly T shirt or rash guard time. The true dry top and dry pants gets the most use, the underneath insulating layers come off as it warms, then the bottoms, then the top goes shorty, then poly T unless the water is real cold then it could be shorty top in 90 degree weather. Old saying was full dry gear until water and air combined are over 120. Meet a Colorado couple who wear full dry gear year round. Its more about water temp than air but you don't want to overheat either. I'm 5'9" tall and 175LB with 40" chest and usually a medium and the medium shorty fits perfect.

Shorty is very warm. 60 degrees is about the break point when I switch to
long sleeve if play boating and going to role a lot, warmer is always
      better.
Sizing I have found is rather small. I take a large in a shirt and
sweatshirt but and xl in my shorty

The shorty would work better if you are playing a lot or working a lot. But if you're just doing a little bit of river running or creeking, the long sleeved would be better. Hope that helps!

I paddle a playboat, so I get wet. I dress for the water temperature. I
wear my flux (long-sleeve dry-top) when the water temp is in the 60s and
below. my stampede (shorty) when it's above.

Find it really comfortable in 65 degree and warmer, breathes really well. Fit is relatively accurate, I wear a medium for Kokatat, Immersion Research, and this fits just right.
Anything less than 65 degrees, I usually opt for long-sleeve.
      Hope that helps! Happy paddling.

Get the shorty. It's great for warm or cold. Add nice dry layer underneath
for really cold. Sizing is true, just get your normal size.

I wear my long sleeve dry top until it gets around 80 or so. Water temp has alot to do with my decision too.

I bought the Stampede and was wondering if the neck gasket be trimmed? Thanks!

      A:

Sorry for the delay in replying. I had to dig out the jacket to double-check. I have way too many paddling jackets/dry tops. The one I have has a neoprene neck closure, not latex. So I would recommend NOT trimming it like you would with a traditional dry top. Mine fits perfectly as received from NRS.. Being neoprene it is water resistant, not water proof. Some water will find its way in. So the fit on the neck closure is not all that critical as compared to a true dry top/ dry suit. It is a nice paddling jacket. It is usually my go-to jacket for warmer weather day trips. I sometimes layer long sleeve Hydrosilk below if a little arm sun protection is necessary.
Let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

before you do any cutting, try this--spray the neck with gasket conditioner and place the neck over a large size soft drink bottle overnite to gently stretch it

It can be trimmed. However, it will stretch a bit over time.

I have two of these short sleeve jackets which I use for late spring and summer paddling in California. The Glideskin seals are very comfortable and essentially waterproof. I wear it with a rash guard for arm sun protection.

great service, fast delivery....unfortunatly the velcro waist band became ungluded after the first use and i had to glue and sew it myself. i live in australia and it was not worth the trouble to send it back. otherwise its good for tropical winter paddling.

The Stampede Shorty fits well and was exactly what I needed for those in between days...
I have not had the chance to try it out on the water yet, but will report more once I've done so.
Gave 4* for now, could be a 5* depending on performance on the water.
