    Q:

My Base Camp filter has slowed noticeably. I do not have a cover for the filter. How do I clean the filter cartridge? I estimate I have only filtered 15-25 gallons of water during since I bought it. Plus, I have not filtered any very dirty water through it. Mostly water from tributaties of the salmon River. Also, where does one get a protective cover for the cartridge?

To answer your question simply..... I had the very same experience as
you two yrs. ago on an 8 day canoe trip with 10 boy scouts and two
other leaders in the Boundary Waters of Minn./Canada. Before leaving
Salem, Or., my 'Ole' rafting buddy also had the same experience as you
      w. the Katadyn a few years back. He advised me to pre-filter the
water through a nylon stocking before pouring into the Katadyn, and if
the water is discolored or muddied to let the impurities settle to the
bottom of your bucket before pouring into the Katadyn. Once the filter
is clogged, the filtering process takes overnight, which is what we
had to do. We had no back-up system. Next time, you may want to pack
a couple pairs of Leggs nylon panty hose (whichever "color" you
prefer)!!!!!! Good Luck..... Sincerely Ed Sanvi

      A:

A protective cover "should" have come with the cartridge. That said, you can order a filter protector as a component of their Field Maintenance kit here:
      http://www.katadyn.com/usen/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-water-filters-accessoriespartskits/hiker-field-maintenance-kit/
You should be able to buy it through them or a listed vendor.
Per the cleaning, from what I understand, only the protector cover itself is cleanable. I am not aware of a way to clean the cartridge directly (a drawback of pleated paper cartridges vs. ceramic filters as I understand).
If the product is newer and less than a year old then in may be covered by their warranty. Talk to retailer or call……... Katadyn Consumer Relations at ***.****
Hope that helps. Sorry to hear about the problem and hope it gets resolved. I have used that system and the Hiker Pro cartridge without any issues so I hope its a rare, solvable issue for you.

The only way to clean the cartridge is to rinse it in clean water and preferably backwash it by running potable water up the outlet tube and through the filter. Rather than trying to place a protective cover around the cartridge, you will be better served by simply pre-filtering impure water through a handkerchief or shirt as you fill the reservoir. I usually do this by scooping water up with a spare Nalgene bottle, wrapping cloth over the top, and then pouring through the cloth into the reservoir. I really prefer using a pump even for large clean water needs as the time required for any given volume is so much less than that needed when using the Base Camp and gravity alone.

I first used this product this summer on a 3-day trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and it worked very well. It was nice to have clean water in camp at a moments notice. The flow is slow but that can be expected when gravity is doing the work.

This filter drove everyone in our week-long canoe expedition crazy. Everyone preferred the much faster filter pumps we took for a back-up or even boiled water. Also, as the containers to be filled neared their limit, the hose from the filter would float out and spill what little water was flowing all over the ground until someone noticed it. The paper filter element is simply surrounded by cloth and has no protection from crushing or similar damage when packed away. When carrying a freshly filled filter bag back to wherever it will be hung, you are sure to get wet. Be sure you have a place from which to hang the bag as it does rely on grevity to work at all. Save yourself the trouble and save your money for a decent filter pump.

was not hard to find parts unlike one I have from another major manufacturer. Good for refilling water jugs in camp if you have the time. Does not take much effort or the time of pumping water and price is reasonable.

Comments about Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter:

I used this filter on a Cataract trip recently. The water in the Colorado is obviously full of sediment, so I tried filling a bucket and letting the sediment settle out for an hour before pouring it into the filter. This didn't work as well as I'd hoped, because after the first bucketful of water I put through the filter, subsequent refills filtered exceptionally slowly and necessitated manually cleaning the sediment off the filter before refilling it each time. I tested the flow rate when I got home by cleaning the sediment off the filter and using clearer water and it went way faster (like 20 minutes instead of 3 hours). I think if you were using this filter on a less muddy river it would probably work just fine, but if you use it on the Colorado or Green, figure out a way to get as much of the sediment out of the water as you can before running it through the filter, or try to use water out of a side stream. Other than the slow filtering time, the water that came out the other end was crystal clear and tasted fine. It just took a long time to produce.
