    Q:

    I have a Bill's Bag 3.8 which needs a couple strap/buckle repairs and have a few questions:

    1) Are the buckles on these compatible with the other buckles on a bill's bag?

    2) The old patch of this type is still on the bag, but has been chewed off right above where the webbing connects, making it useless and also in the way. Do you recommend taking out the stitching on the webbing, getting it off, and then putting the new patch/buckle over it, or something else?

    3) Some of the other straps on the bag have been chewed off a few inches above where they attach to the bag. Do you recommend trying to sew another piece of webbing to the current one, or just replacing it altogether?

    6) I see that you have new buckles for sale as well, but that they're only for bags made >2003. Any advice on buckles for bags made before that?

    Thanks!

When buckles break or webbing breaks - i sew on buckle which fits the corresponding buckle on with webbing - it does okay if I sew with a hand awl.
At our camp we have a variety of bags and buckles, seems like the buckles break first.  So last year I ended up buying buckle sets (male/female) and adding to webbing on both sides
In a few instances I have considered just gluing another patch and buckle further down on the bag and lengthening corresponding webbing

Chelsea, the buckles on the Bill's Bags have certainly changed over the years; I know, I have a range of them! Without knowing what yours have we can't guarantee mates. As to gluing on a new buckle patch you can trim off all the webbing and glue a new one over the old patch. You can probably remove the old patch, with the combination of a heat gun and MEK solvent, but you'll have to be careful not to critically damage the bag. I appreciate you wanting to salvage what's probably still a dry bag. As to matching buckles, you can look locally at a good outdoor store, marine store or shop that builds tarps, boat covers, etc to see if you can match a buckle piece. Or you can email us measurements and photos of the buckle parts so we can see if we can make a match - service@nrs.com. Or sometimes you just have to say, "well, this old fella's just gonna have to become the trip garbage bag," and get a new replacement!

Our best adhesive for this job is G/flex Epoxy, Item # 50215.01. It's great stuff for lots of repair jobs. Take a look at the extra info in the More Information section on the product page. It's not a contact adhesive so you'll need to weight the patches while they cure.

Comments about NRS Dry Bag Patch /Female End - PVC:

I used it, along with the male end, to add a tie down strap to a waterproof backpack after searching fruitlessly for a lashing patch for webbing. I found this at NRS and it combined the patch and the webbing and a quick connect buckle!
