A good rule of thumb: If your boat extends beyond the windshield, secure the bow and stern. For a safe and secure load, you can't beat Yakima's Bow/Stern Tie Downs.

Comments about Yakima Bow/Stern Tie Down:

I was going to jury rig the bow and stern tie downs for my large Hobie tandem kayak on top of my 2010 Outback when I stumbled across this product while buying some NRS tie down straps. I figure since it was made for what I needed I ought to try it out. I tied the front off to the tow hook I inserted in the front bumper and tied off rear to my hitch. It worked perfectly and the front plastic protection ensured I did not touch the paint on the car with any tie downs. It was rock steady for 400 highway miles at up to 75 mph coming and going.

The ONLY thing that I wondered about as I watched the front tie down flap in the breeze is why they fashioned the S hook with such an open design versus a more closed "S" where it grips the nylon tiedown. At first it seemed like the hook could slip from the nylon tiedown at any time but I guess the tension holds it in place.

It held steady the sntire trip but I still wonder why they did not "close" the "S" on the hook a bit more so there was little possibility if it coming undone.

I like the product and the end result so I will use it on all of my car topping trips with the kayak. Rock steady...

The ratcheting system makes these real easy to use. I have another pair that I've used for several years - very good quality.

                • Yakima Bow/Stern Tie Down

                  Q:

Does Yakima make any tie down straps that are secured under the hood and inside the back hatchback, instead of securing them under the car. Someone I know has such a system and loves it--very easy.

                    A:

                    Dear Barb the outdoor lover:
You asked about whether Yakima makes any tie-down straps that are secured under the hood and inside the back hatchback.
Both Yakima and Thule make loop strap devices that you can secure a regular tie-down strap to.
Yakima makes the Yakima Anchor Strap Kit. One end is attached to a bolt under your hood or rear of the car. You keep the loop end out when you close your hood.  You attach the tie-down strap to the loop.
This product is not sold by NRS, but you can see this product at the RackAttack.Com site at:
                    http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/yakima-anchor-strap-kit.asp
You'll need to find a bolt toward the rear end of the car. That may not be so easy with a hatchback. But read on.
First, Thule makes a similar product to the Yakima Anchor Strap. The Thule Hood Loop Strap is basically the identical design of the Yakima Anchor Strap. You can see this product on the rackattack.com site at:
                    http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/thule-529-hood-loop-kayak-canoe-strap.asp
Thule also makes a strap that you can place under the lid of your trunk or tailgate. The Thule 530 Quick Loop Strap secures inside your tailgate, with the loop sticking out from the gate. You can see this product at the rackattack.com site at:
                    http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/thule-530-quick-loop-kayak-canoe-strap.asp
I don't work for RackAttack.Com and am just a fellow NRS shopper and devoted sea kayaker. I found these products and use them because I have a two-door coupe that I sometimes use to transport my kayak to and from the water, and that car did not have any anchor points. I purchased the Thule Hood Loop Strap to provide an anchor point for the front of the car and the Thule Quick Loop Strap to provide an anchor point for the rear of the car. Of course, nothing beats a hard mount to the car, but these products perform well.
                    Hope this helps! Happy holidays-
                    Best-
                    Wendell

                    A:

The Yakima bow/stern tie-down straps can hook anywhere - under the car,
under the hood, or inside a hatchback. Just find a strong anchor and then
route the rope up and over the front edge of the hood or through the top of
the open hatchback. The kit comes with plastic rub protector tubes that
will keep the ropes from chaffing the vehicle's paint/trim.
