    Q:

Is the foam material stiff or is it pliable for more comfort?

      A:

I would not say that it is stiff. The thickness of the foam varies so that in the thickest area (lower back area), it is less pliable. Thinner areas like below the chest are the most pliable. Hope this helps.

      A:

      Hi Beard,
The Foam material is not stiff like Styrofoam; it does bend a little and it has some flexibility, but it is not nearly as flexible as neoprene.
The features that I like best about this PFD are in its design.  The foam flotation material is contained in the front blue panels and wraps around you in the side gray panels. The front panels zip together in the front, and have two adjustment straps on each side (between the gray panels and the back) that adjust easily through nylon type buckles, but hold firm once you adjust them and pull them against the buckle.
The back panel has floatation foam in it and reaches from your waist/upper hip area to your upper back below the nap of your neck.
As I mentioned above, the design feature I like best about this PFD is its comfort.  Neither the front, side, nor back panels rub you during extended, vigorous paddling, and it doesn't ride up like some PFDs.  Your upper arms, during full extension frontwards, flexion backwards, abduction overhead, or adduction with elbows scraping your sides, have free range of motion without rubbing you raw on the PFD.
      Hope that helps.

The front panels of the jacket are articulated to curve around the chest. With the fit and the breathable features, I'd say it's a very comfortable life jacket.

This is the most comfortable vest I own. The foam in my other vest is 3 large chunks, fairly rigid. With this vest the foam feels like it's in multiple small sections, thus very comfortable and easily moves with you when you paddle. It also doesn't ride up like a lot of vests. I highly recommend it!

Poly.  I just got back from a very hot trip on the San Juan.   This pfd is the most comfortable I have ever worn, especially in that kind of heat! I highly recommend it!!!

      Comments about Astral V-Eight PFD:

Today in Grand Prairie Texas it will be 105F and the heat index will take it to 111F. Our Dive/Rescue Team patrols Joe Pool Lake 8 hours per day on weekends. We need a PFD that you can swim with, lightweight, and durable. The Astral V8 is the perfect PFD when the temperature soars. The PFD can be worn lose for normal cruising and can be quickly snugged for high speed rescue response. The design allows complete range of motion for extended swims.

        Comments about Astral V-Eight PFD:

I purchased two of these PFDs for my Beautiful Bride and me, so we could get out kayaking in Alberta's lakes. The vests are comfortable, easily adjustable and very well ventilated. We both appreciate the shaped foam in the vest at chest level, as it accomodates my pecs and her needs too. The vests have a small pocket for storing a basic survival kit (in a waterproof pouch) though I would prefer a little more pocket space (maybe one on each side).

The fit of the vest is very good, being easily and quickly adjusted to one's individual physique. About the only thing I don't like is the lack of built-in ability to secure straps once the fit is adjusted. The design of the vests enables them to be used for paddling a kayak, meaning that the rear floatation panels are above the kidneys, keeping the lower back clear so you can use the kayak seat properly.

Floatation is adequate for our needs. Small strips of reflective material on the vest help with visibility.

I am very happy with this purchase and would not hesitate to recommend this vest to kayakers.

          Didn't live up to expectations

            Best Uses

              Comments about Astral V-Eight PFD:

I had high expectations for both comfort and breathability, but was disappointed in both. I found the padding interfered with arm motion around the "spare tire" area when kayaking, and overall it was quite stiff. The vents amy be a cute marketing idea, but they really don't allow for much air motion - therefore no heat transfer.
