Comments about Navisafe Navi Light Tri Color 2NM:

Last year, a friend of mine purchased these lights. He worked for the Harbor Master and was extremely concerned with safety, especially during late night kayaking trips in high traffic areas. At first, I was a little hesitant about the cost of each light, but after a summer of day/evening trips, I soon realized that they were extremely valuable.

I eventually purchased my own set and I absolutely love them! I use them on the water, but also in the tent and even in the car in case of emergency. These lights are extremely handy, even in the off season. I intend on buying a few more and I recommend you do the same.

Comments about Navisafe Navi Light Tri Color 2NM:

Excellent navigation light. Extremely bright and easily attached but attachment through the kayaks hull obviously depends on the thickness of the material. I had to attach mine to my deck bag which had the positive effect of raising it a few inches higher. This made it even more visible to other boaters. During a local fireworks display which I watched from the Tennessee River, local law enforcement commented on its brightness.

No, this light has 5 modes. All on, white, red/green, red, green.. This light is great for a bow light in the red/green. Some of the other navi lights have a flash mode.

No, it does not have a “blink/flash” mode, as that would not be in compliance with US Coast Guard regulations.

No, they would not be US Coast Guard approved bow lights if they blinked.

This tri color light does not have a flashing feature. It has all lights
on, red and green only, red only, green only, white only.
The 360 degree white light has a flashing mode where it blinks a few time
        per second.

no, it would be illegal for navigation lights to blink, but used as
portable navigation lights they are excellent

No. It does not have a blink mode. It would not meet coast guard
navigation rules if it flashed and could confuse other mariners about what
        they are seeing.

The light I have does not have a “blink”mode. It is designed to function as a navigation light and those lights mustshine a steady beam. This light is extremely bright and I have had severalboaters, both recreation and law enforcement, tell me that it is easily seenfrom quite a distance. If it ever quits working it will be replaced asap with anew one.

if used as a single light; will this suffice for coast guard requirements for running and anchor light?

Mike, this Navisafe document states that it is USCG approved - http://shipwright-agencies.com/Navisafe_USCG.pdf - To keep the white light out of your eyes, something like the Telescopic Pole, Item # 2796, may be necessary.

I don't know for sure, but you may have to buy the single-color (360* all white) version to satisfy those requirements. I know that the requirements change based on what type of vessel: length, propulsion, etc...

From what I can find, this tricolor light isn't legal as a single light for either running or anchoring. Here is a link to a boatUS website discussing legalities and showing legal configurations. http://www.boatus.com/foundation/guide/navigation_16.html
Here is another link showing a 360 degree white mast light for anchored boats. One illustration on this web page does show a tricolor light used on a sailboat mast, but this appears to be legal only for sailboats underway.
        http://nyss.com/federal
The 360 all white light NRS sells has many applications and can be used in combination with the tricolor to achieve a "legal" configuration on any number of boats.
I bought this tri color light and the telescoping mount to use on a 9' motorized inflatable and plan to mount it on my outboard motor cover. I think the only way it doesn't meet the regs for nav lights for my tender is that it doesn't have a 360 degree white light, but I usually carry a headlight when running at night that can convert to a 360 light.
When running my tender at night, I'm more concerned about being visible to other boats rather than getting a ticket. This light is really bright and with the telescoping mount and should be far more visible than the other junk sold for inflatable boat nav lights.
