A good river guide!

Comments about RiverMaps Hell's Canyon & Lower Salmon Guide Book:

This is really a good river guide. Maps include topographic lines. All campsites are described. It has a good description of major rapids, including scouting opportunities. The only thing I don't like about it is that it big! At 14x9 inches it doesn't fit into the ammo box mounted next to the seat on my raft. During major rapids I have to put it in my large dry box -- not a major problem, but an inconvenience. It could easily be made with a few more (but smaller) maps and be more usable to me.

Comments about RiverMaps Hell's Canyon & Lower Salmon Guide Book:

This is a high-quality guide replacing my old one. It is a little big (doesn't fit into my ammo box). So I have to store it in my dry box during major rapids. The information seems good, and it doesn't include the 'fictitious' campsites that other guides include.

              Q:

Does this guide book also include trail map (and campground info) for Pittsburg Landing, Kirkwood Ranch and the hiking trail systems of the Snake River National Recreation Trail? Thanks!

              • A:

The river map of Hell's Canyon and the the Lower Salmon river does show trails as they use USGS maps overlaid with additional information such as river milage. The map is for river users and is not geared for hikers. So, trail information and camping information at Pittsburgh Bar is limited. I hope this helps!

The guide book does NOT include any information about the National Recreation hiking trails along Snake.  It does include information about camping at Pittsburg Landing and the Kirkwood Ranch.  This is a river guide not a hiking guide so the only trails
it mentions are to things of interest along the river like rock art, old cabins etc.

No it doesn't include specific trail maps, and has only a little info on hiking from the river.  It has reproductions of the river corridor's topo maps, so it shows the trails adjacent to the river.  The book does have significant info on camping and amenities at both Pittsburg landing and Kirkwood ranch.

No, there is not much about trails and info on Pittsburgh Landing is limited to basic info on the boat ramp, vault toilet and potable water available, permit station, and 28 tent/rv sites at the campground.

Susan, this guide book is aimed at the river recreation users. The USGS topo maps and text descriptions detail campsites along the river and trails along the river corridor are shown in places as dotted lines. However, the off river trail system isn't shown. Go here for some info on the trail system, and contact information for the Forest Service - http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/wallowa-whitman/recreation/recarea/?recid=51665
