Great Pump!

Pros

  • High Quality
  • Works Well

Cons

  • Base Is Too Small

Best Uses

Comments about Carlson 4" Hand Pump:

This is a great high quality pump that will get the job done, and should last quite a while. The reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the base is just too small. You can't get any good leverage on it with your foot. This can be a pain, but if this pump ever brakes on me, I will probably buy another Carlson.

This is a pump that will last a lifetime. Very rugged. The hose has just the right amount of flex.

              Q:

I bought an old rubber raft with brass military style non-checking twist valves. Does the pump have a check valve? If not, do I need one?

No check valve on this pump. Not sure if you can buy something to adapt with this pump.
The end of hose nozzle on this pump will except almost every adapter. I don't think there is a better hand pump out there.
                Carlson nailed it!

Max, this pump doesn't have a check valve. You really need that feature with your valves; otherwise air will just push back into the pump on the recovery stroke. There on the Hand Pump page the K-100 and K-200 pumps have a check valve option. Also, any of the K-Pump two-stage pumps like the K-40 and K-400 have check valves. There is no reason to open it for cleaning or service, It is maintenance free. I have used one for over 15 years and it takes the abuse with no problem. As far as I am concerned this is the best pump for topping off rafts and inflating small boats.

There's a screw that secures the top cap. Shouldn't take a lot of servicing.
