  • The adjustable, padded shoulder straps and waist belt spread the boat's weight between the shoulders and hips, increasing carry comfort.
  • Three long, heavy-duty 1-1/2" webbing straps that clip around the boat give you great versatility for attaching your kayak to the pack.
  • Leaves your hands free for carrying other gear, for balancing, or for holding onto a bow strap for longer boats.
  • When you get to the water, stow the Sherpa behind your seat or up in the bow.
  • No more propping the kayak on your shoulder or dragging it up the trail. The Whitewater Kayak Sherpa just made getting to that great playspot or creek run a lot easier.

    Q:

Hi there. I have a 12' Otter self-bailer that I use for creeking. I'd like to know if the Sherpa is strong enough to carry the 91lb weight of the Otter with the boat rolled up.

Have looked at the Paragon also, but that pack system does not appear to carry loads as large a diameter as my rolled up Otter.

Hi, we decided to return the Sherpa, because we found that the buckles of
the main straps slip and loosen up, and we couldn't get it tightened down
enough to not wobble around. We order one each of the Colorado kayak supply
and Salamander bak yaks since we need 2 anyway. They both look very
similar, so we thought we would give them each a try.

Hi, we haven't had a chance to try them out yet. We're using them this
weekend and will give you an update. But, I can say that some of the straps
are very long so it seems like you could configure it to work. I don't know
right now if the rig will stand up to that amount of weight since I don't
have it in front of me right now, but I'll let you know after this weekend.
      Cheers,

      Hey Phill,
Not sure I can really give an opinion. I use the harness to carry a kayak - laden with gear it probably weighs about 50lb.
The main difficulty is with the length of the kayak - I find the top end quite unstable and the bottom end sometimes bangs my legs. A shorter, heavier load such as you describe might work OK.

It will be a compomise, but easily do- able. My only thought is you might have to modify it slightly with a specific vertical strap. But othe than that I think it's good to go.

Here's what Kurtis, one of our kayakers who's used the Sherpa has to say - "It should be able to carry the weight, but getting the raft rigged will be tricky. The Sherpa straps are designed to run through kayak handles/grab loops, not cradle and cinch around an object. The back panel is also not rigid so that it can be rolled and stowed in the kayak after use. It will take the shape of whatever object it is attached to and may be incredibly uncomfortable depending on said object."

    Q:

I am having a difficult time getting the boat to stay high enough on my back to keep from kicking it while walking. It also slides left to right. It appears the straps come loose after tightening.

Maybe i should try stern up?

    Any suggestions?

Boat is a JK Superfun. Thanks.

Trying it stern up is a good idea. To stabilize it side-to-side, try tying two straps to the top handle, with one tail on either side of the boat. Hold them in your hands, maybe while gripping the paddle in front of you. Give us a call, 800.635.5202, if you need further help.

Although its been awhile since I've used the sherpa, I initially had the
same problem. I have a jk 2007 fun... and I'm 5'11". Get the top strap into
the indented channel right above the cowling and really tighten it down..I
don't remember if the bottom strap fit into the channel behind the back of
the cowling....In any case, after experimenting, I got it to work. I think
I tried stern down and it didn't work.... Goog luck...Phil

It was definitely challenging at first, but by Wrapping the top strap around the handle in front of the cockpit it stopped the boat sliding off to one side. In terms of the boat hitting your legs we use a flip line attached to the front handle to pull forward on the nose. Also helps with balance

      Hi,
I use mine with a Hefe Grande - and find I have to lean forward a bit to stop myself kicking it. And yes - mine also slides left to right. I have found using a strap on the top grab-loop stops the sideways slip.

I use this to portage around all over the place from canals in the suburbs, to the beach, and remote locations. Take some time to get used to carrying your boat with this and you'll be happy you bought this. There's no big frame so it folds up nicely and there are plenty of pockets in it too.
