How To: Military Valve Repair and Replacement (4:21)

The military valve used on inflatable rafts and other watercraft is a very durable and dependable unit that's been used for years. It's especially found on older boats. Replacing the valve itself is pretty simple; just six screws hold the valve in place. However, generally the valve is installed in a recessed boot. Replacing a boot is a pretty major repair job. In this video NRS Repairs goes over all the steps for repairing and replacing military valves, including replacing a boot.

I like this alternative to the now super expensive metal military variety. They seem to be holding up well so far, they keep the repair kit light. Spit makes a good lube as needed.
Note that the body diameter is slightly larger than some of the valves they replace. I did run into a rat who needed to borrow one and he could not get it to fit in his tubes (can't remember his boat, want to say vintage avon or riken). I know these fit our old udesco and riken boats.

I've replaced many valves over the past 37 years....this had to be the most difficult to install. It holds air but it's tough to open and close. With that exception, it's a great valve...I shouldn't have to relace that valve again during the remaining life of the raft.

I used these to replace the impossible to find Maravia AD-2 valves. I just unscrewed the AD-2 and the Military valve when right in. I placed a bit of silicone between the valve and the boot. Started the screws with a small punch and the worked awesome. Just saying!

No, a valve cover isn't needed. Just blow out any water and debris before attaching your pump.

The Leafield/Military Valve Adapter, Item # 38524.01, fits these valves just fine. The hose ends on the NRS Barrel Pump and Carlson pumps will also fit in your valves. The K-Pumps also have adapters that easily the valves. If you're fully filling the boat with the hand pump you'll probably want a high volume pump like the Barrel Pump, Carlsons or larger K-Pump. A lot depends on how much money you want to spend. Give us a call, 800.635.5202, to fine tune your choice. Here are the pumps - http://www.nrs.com/category/2892/rafting/hand-pumps

In my experience, all military-style valves share the same screw hole pattern. Be sure to clean off the seating surface on the boat. Some people put a thin bead of silicone sealant on the surface before screwing the valve on. We also carry extra screws, Item # 38517.01, if you need them.

Yes, but it is not the same quality as the metal one. Replaced the floor
valve on a 92' Hyside and had to tap new scew holes into the rubber flange
on the floor. I also used glue to create a tight seal between the valve and
                        boat.

I have an older Campways inflatable boat. The existing valve looks similar to the Nylon Military Valve. It has Campways USA No.302 stamped on the flange. It has 6 mounting screws and has a flange diameter of about 2-1/4". Is this an equivalent or is there another?

It should work fine. The flange on this valve is 2 3/8", but the holes should line up with the screw holes on your boats. Check the condition of the screws. Our Replacement Screws,Item #38517.01, are cheap ($0.02 ea). To ensure a good seal, clean the seating surface on the boat and put a thin bead of silicone sealant under the flange.

I'm not sure of the thread specs, but these valves are a one piece valve. Simply pull out the old and in with the new. The only time I've ever seen them in two parts is when they've already broken.

This valve attaches to the military valve boot with six small screws. Hoover over the product photo with your cursor and you'll see the holes. So, this valve doesn't fit your needs.
