Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin 1.5 Pants:

I used these pants on a week long kayak trip to Quebec in August. Air temps were in the 55-80 degree range and water temps were in the 65-75 degree range. I was pretty warm and comfortable inside the kayak and also when I had to get out and wade in the water. The pants were well insulated and held up well during the week. They bunched up a little behind the knees, but were quite comfortable overall.
The insulation layer inside the pants takes some time to dry out. Despite being hung out to dry each night, they were a little wet each morning when I put them on, but quickly warmed up. Overall, I am very pleased with them.

I got it for Gauley season, it performed great, and has been good for spring so far. Bought this and the matching jacet instead of a whole suit and am glad I did. I can mix and match depending on the conditions of the day. The fleece liner is comfortable and helps with the extraction at the end of the day.

1.5 mil has been good for me but I have an extra layer of blubber to help me out.

Hopefully it's durable, well see how the CO season treats it.

Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin 1.5 Pants:

I have been a surfer for most of my life. I have also flyfished since the early 1980s. About ten years ago I started saltwater flyfishing. Wearing waders in the surf seemed dangerous to me, yes I know fisherman have used waders for years in the surf but being a surfer the thought of wearing waders in the surf and getting knocked down and dragged into the ocean wasn't appealing. I tried wetsuits but they were too hot and uncomfortable to fish in as wetsuits were made to surf in and not standing on the beach casting flies. I recently met a fellow saltwater flyfisher and noticed he was wearing what looked like a wetsuit. I asked him if he found it uncomfortable fishing in a wetsuit. He told me it wasn't a wetsuit but pants made of neoprene. I immediately ordered a pair. I also flyfish on the bay in San Diego with a pontoon boat where only the lower parts of my legs are submerged. The pants are lightweight, stretch, warm and the perfect solution to use in the bay. I wear a pair of surfer booties with the pants and I'm ready to fish the bay or the surf. Great product.

                  A:

The HydroSkin material itself will not pass water through. The stitched seams are not sealed, so some water can seep through them. And water will enter at the waist and ankles. This is an efficient wetsuit garment, designed to fit very snug to minimize water flushing in and out, which pulls heat away from the body.

They are not really waterproof but they keep you warm even when they are
wet. They work sort of like a wetsuit, but are more comfortable and easier
                  to get on and off.

These are not a dry suits, but wet suit material which keeps you warm after
being splashed or getting wet climbing into a boat. Your body warms you up
and the material holds the heat. LS

Waterproof? No, they're not meant to be. But they will provide an extra
layer of insulation in a semi-dry environment. If you swim, water will
still find its way inside but you will be better insulated.

They work great inside a kayak with a sprayskirt and are perfectly warm when wet. I use the 1.5 mm thickness in colder weather - much too warm in summer, for example. However, these aren't meant to be worn like a wet suit while swimming or surfing since they would tend to fill with water and bulge. That said, I wear the equivalent on top over my sprayskirt with different thicknesses (1.5 mm or 1.0 mm HydroSkin) depending on how warm it is, and this configuration sheds water easily. In cold winter weather I wear a dry top with 0.5 mm HydroSkin.

                Q:

I have the NRS farmer jon suit and I want to paddle in winter 30 degree Smoky Mountains whitewater. I use a drytop and another wetsuit top under that. I am looking for pants to go either under or over my Jon Suit pants area incase of a swim. Should I go with the 1.5 or think about .5 or .1? Currently the Jon Suit fits snug so I wasn't sure I would be able to wear both. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Jeremy, 30 degree water temp is really drysuit territory. If you continue to go with wetsuits for protection you'll certainly want to maximize the layering. Since your wetsuit fits snug, which is good, the 1.5 HydroSkin probably won't fit under it; depending on your dimensions you might be able to pull it on over the John. The 0.5 might likely fit under the suit. Our exchanges are easy and free, so you might purchase several options to try. Also check out our Dealer Locator to see if a nearby store may have items to try on - https://www.nrs.com/services/dealerlocator.asp - And if you continue to boat in those conditions I strongly recommend you look into purchasing a drysuit.

Could put a 1.5 or .5 over the farmer jon or buy a pair of waterproof paddle pants over the farmer jon. I do that over my neoprene and get a bit wet but not soaked when I have had to swim in cold weather. I paddle in the Northeast.

Neil, neoprene thickness needed depends on water temperature, how long you're likely to remain in the water, your cold tolerance, etc. We have several dealers in southern California that carry HydroSkin. Please check in with them to see what they recommend for your type of use. They'll be good resources and happy to get your business.
