Type B is to be solely used on PVC (vinyl)-coated materials. Type A - http://www.nrs.com/product/1980/tear-aid-patch-type-a - works on a wide variety of materials, that are listed there on the product page. Type A does not work on PVC.

As long as it's kept protected from exposure to solvents and glues it should last indefinitely.

              Q:

Hello, how big are the patches in the type b tear-aid kits. My i.k. cane with a few 1.5" squares of tearaid, but i think i need bigger pieces than that because the patch is supposed to be a couple inches bigger on all sides than the tear, correct?

Emily, the sizes of the patches are listed there in the Specs tab. Really, the best deal is the 3" x 5' roll. That way you can make patches the size that you want. And yes, going out a couple of inches beyond the tear is wise. Also, you can consider doing a glue-on PVC patch. It's not hard, check out this video - http://www.nrs.com/learn/repair-pvc-and-urethane-boats.asp - There are lots of other repair resources on the website. And you can give us a call with any questions, 800.635.5202.

Yes, Rick, Tear-Aid has a removable backing to cover the adhesive. The rolls come on a fairly large diameter spool. I rewind it to a smaller diameter and pack along the whole roll. Good stuff!

This stuff is amazing for patching vinyl. I used it for some small holes on
an 8 foot diameter beach ball. The kids play rough with it but the patches
                never fail.
It comes in a small sheet (not a roll) and does have a backing. I used the
sheet to cut multiple patches, as needed.

Sandy, here are the contents: (1) 3" x 12" Patch, (1) 1 3/8" x 1 3/8" Patch, (1) 7/8" x 7/8" Patch, (2) Alcohol Prep Pads, 36" Reinforcement Filament (For Repairing Tears at Edges), and Illustrated Repair Instructions. If that doesn't sound like it's enough, opt for the roll of Tear-Aid; it's a great deal.

I have not used my kit yet. If the sizes of your areas needing repair are small enough to be covered with these patches, I think it should work.

The kit has two alcohol wipes, one small patch about the size of a postage stamp and a large patch that is 3" x 12". I purchased the patch kit as a precaution and have not had an opportunity to use it on my Vanguard raft. I ensure I put in our "rafting bag", along with a pair of scissors, in case of emergency. Frankly, I would not trust these patches as a permanent fix. They appear to be enough to get you down the river and through the trip--nothing more.

Here is what the kit contains:
                • Roll Size: 3"W x 5'L
                • Kit Contains:

                • (1) 7/8" x 7/8" Patch
If your boat is PCV - and you can patch the tear with sufficient material to reach 1/2 - 1 inch beyond the tear, it should hold just fine. If your boat is not PCV - it will not work.

                Renee--
I got the 3" by 5' roll--so I can cut to size.  I recommend that, because there are times when a boat can get a long cut or rip.  My choice over patches
PVC IS vinyl--as in polyvinyl chloride, although there are a couple other "vinyl" products: Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) andPolyethylene Vinyl Acetate (PEVA) a copolymer of polyethylene and EVA.  Just be sure to get the Type B Tear-Aid for vinyl.  Type A is for Hypalon.  And remember that the chemical bond strengthens over some hours.  I used type B to repair a vinyl liner in an AIRE boat and used it immediately with no problem.

For small holes this product works surprisingly well and is really quick.  You only use the Type B if your boat is PVC not Hyplon or other. I think saturn inflatables are PVC, but I am not positive.  If it is Hyplon you need Type A, which I have not used.
