Replacing a drysuit zipper is not DIY, and it's a very expensive repair. Preventative care, such as like regularly cleaning and lubricating drysuit zipper teeth, will help preserve zipper health. Also, using good techniques to roll and fold the drysuit for transportation to and from the water will help prevent fatal damage. In this instructional video, NRS Repairs guru Josh Gile goes over all the tips for ensuring that the zipper will last the life of your drysuit.

Comments about Kokatat Men's Gore-Tex Meridian Drysuit with Relief Zipper-GMER:

Sizing chart was perfect and suit is great. I've used it a handful of times in Class II-III and haven't had a drop of water in it. I've rolled 5 times and nothing has gotten in. Zipper is a little hard to manage zipping up, but other than that it's a great suit. Definitely worth the price.

Although the fit is good acording to the size chart, I wish the entry zipper was 2-3" longer. This would make it much easier to remove the suit.

Used in Maine for kayaking in 47-50F water. Protected against the cold as advertised (note - also needs insulating undergarments), the relief zipper worked perfectly. Needed to expand the neck seal to help alleviate the tight neck feeling (just followed the instructions on NRS website and in use I ended up forgetting about the neck seal). Bottom line - this suit just worked well with no surprises.

                  Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was prompt and the suit arrived in perfect condition.

Yes. Go to the Kokatat website and use the "gizmo" for custom dry suits. This will give you custom sizing specs which you can give to NRS customer service. They will order the custom suit which takes 4-6 weeks.

I'd really like to know your opinion on which drysuit, the Kokatat Meridian or the Kokatat Icon, is more durable.
I've heard the Icon is more difficult to get into and out of. Has this been your experience?
I understand the suits have different zippers. Which is more durable?

                      A:

The Gore-Tex material in the suits is the same. The Meridian has Kokatat's metal tooth zipper and the Icon zipper has heavy-duty plastic teeth. The Meridian zipper runs diagonally across the chest and the Icon's horizontally across the shoulders. Yes, the Meridian is a bit easier to get into, but the Icon zipper location is out of the way of the PFD. A reasonably flexible person can close the Icon zipper by themselves; or get your buddy to help - you should be boating with others, right? As to durability, I'd say they're comparable.

I’m familiar with the Kokatat Meridan Dry Suit (Sells for about $1,100.00) but not the Icon. The zipper is very difficult to zip shut for the first 3” on the Meridan - after that it is easier. The problem is that the zipper goes back too far behind the shoulder (on the extra large sized suit) and it takes a lot of force to get those first 3 inches zipped.
The video at http://www.nrs.com/shop/video_Library.asp?vid=613&cv=1 <http://www.nrs.com/shop/video_Library.asp?vid=613&cv=1> - at the 1 minute point in the video - shows how to zip the zipper shut. They must have put some serious silicone spray (or similar) for it to zip up over the shoulder that easily!
That said, the suit is excellent in quality and worth the money if you go out, especially in the winter in New England (USA). The included booties allow me to wear socks and have kept my feet warm for the last 2 seasons. This is my 3rd Meridan in 21 years. All equipment has quirks. The answer to the zipper issue is either to lift weights or have a friend assist you.

I have only used the Kokatat Meridian drysuit. To me this is the best
dry suit on the market. I have about 100 days on the dry suit and it
stills keeps me very dry. No issues with zippers(as long as you wax
them). I am 6 ft 170 lbs and the medium fits me perfect. The neck
gasket was a little tight at first, but now its perfect. I don't think you
can go wrong if you stay with Kokatat, but I am very happy with my
meridian. I recommend going to a store that has them and try them both
on. Especially for the fit. Seems that every style fits a little
                      different.

You can't go wrong with it, other than it is a bit pricey. It has kept me
dry and warm whether creeking or when surfing the calmer rivers. It is
great in cold weather, especially with wool socks inside the gortex
booties. Lubricate the zipper or else bave a buddy around to get in and
                      out of it.

i have only used this dry suit twice and my legs and feet were soaked. Are the built in socks not water proof? It was my understanding that they are supposed to be. Thats why i payed for a upper end suit. It was very disturbing being two miles out on the 52 degree water and the suit failed.

Contact NRS or Kokatat...should be waterproof. If it's a new suit it's under warranty. If it's older, Kokatat will deal with you fairly. Just a pain to deal with.

I've never had a problem with my suit or heard of anyone else having any
issues either. Are you sure you had all the zippers closed completely?
Check for holes but on a new suit that would be unusual. It sounds like a
                      zipper that was not closed.
                      Good luck.

The suit should be completely water proof. Was the zipper sealed? You may

                      Hello,
I've had mine for two years and it's great. The socks and everything is
waterproof. You must have a hole somewhere or you are wearing too many
clothes underneath and sweating. If you're not overdressing, you need to
send it to the factory for inspection.

These are fully integrated (a stitched-in part of the suit) socks. I wear scuba or surf booties depending on conditions, but recommend you always wear some sort of shoe to protect the Gortex from tears, punctures or abrasion which will reduce their life expectancy and potential water intrusion. Since they are thin they will fit snuggly inside your shoe, but may require a half size larger shoe if yours are already tight fitting.

That drysuit has it all...including the Gore-tex booties. My first drysuit had ankle gaskets and the drysuit worked fine, but ankle gaskets make a drysuit more difficult to take off...and the main problem...cold wet feet in my neoprene booties especially in colder weather paddling. That's a pricey drysuit, but it's the best one out there and I'd buy it again.

I am going to get a Meridian Dry Suit with Gore Tex socks. I know I will need to get new water shoes because my current ones won't fit over the gore-tex sock. Two questions. Is there a specific formula for choosing a size (such as one size larger than normal)? And what type of footwear do people recommend with this suit? I have always used an over the ankle, Desperado shoe. But I was wondering if a lower shoe would be better. Thanks

I wear a pair of medium weight hiking socks inside my dry suit booty's and a pair of 5.10 Water Tennies, a half size larger than my normal shoe size, over the dry suit gore-tex booty's. I like them pretty snug but not toe curling tight. They are the best shoe out there now in my opinion, and stick like glue, much like a climbing shoe. Whatever you use, take care of your shoes and wash them out to make sure there is no sand left inside after each trip. The DS booty's are usually the first place to start leaking and the sand inside a shoe will wear the gore-tex booty's out quick.

I've always gone 1-2 sizes up for shoes I wear with my drysuit so I can
wear neoprene socks and water shoes over the goretex socks. The goretex
socks definitely take more of a beating than the rest of the suit and,
while Kokatat will replace them, it isn't cheap. Make sure to take care of
                      them!

I currently use the old style Desperado Wetshoes when I need the sole protection. All my boats have a lower deck and I need a minimalist type bootie. Whatever you choose will need to have a bit of wiggle room for the additional fabric especially if you're wearing beefy inner socks for colder weather paddlling. The ankle high booties work fine with the Goretex booties and Velcro closure....Great drysuit!

                      Hi Chris,
I have used the Kokatat Meridian extensively for 4 years now...overskirt, relief zipper, goretex booties...definitely a top of the line drysuit. I'm about 5'10" 165lb sz 10 boots and squeeze into a medium...it fits great, but a tight squeeze to get my head in although it's sized to 6 feet. I would recommend finding a shop you could try on the XL. Once you have an idea how you fit in the standard size, you might consider calling Kokatat about custom sizing...for a longer leg cut, proper placement for the relief zipper, best bootie sizing. I don't think a custom suit costs much more and when you're spending that kind of money on a drysuit, a custom fit would be worth the cost. If you love to paddle, a quality proper fitting drysuit will get you out on those cold weather days.
                      Good luck,
                      Jim

I've read you should measure wearing some fleece or what you would wear under the drysuit and these measurements are to the skin instead. Another reason I'm thinking I should go with a large.

Most of your measurements are right in the Medium. The ones that aren't are in the slimmer area of the suit. I do have a concern that you'll find the Large too tall. If possible, see if one of our dealers is near you - http://www.nrsweb.com/services/dealerlocator.asp?tn=281 - If not, go for the Large, or if you can afford it order both.
