Comments about Kokatat Hydrus 3L Whirpool Bib Dry Pants:

I have been using kokatat bibs for over 14 years and this is my third pair. I think they are a good alternative to a dry suit because they give you flexibility and are more affordable. I can also attest to them being almost as dry as a dry suit after taking a few swims over the years. There are only two real negatives I can think of with them. You have to remove most of your gear to go to the bathroom and you have to use extra layers for your feet to stay warm due to the ankle gaskets. I use neoprene socks under my booties to solve that issue. I do not paddle when it gets much below 50 degrees and I am not sure if I would recommend these much colder weather.

I'm 6'4", 190 pounds, 34 inch waist, which looks like a large. The problem is my 36" inseam.
Considering I'll use minimal layered clothing underneath, what's the best size for me, L or XL?
Asked on 10/1/2016 by Mark from Alabama

Mark, for what it’s worth I own these bib pants in size M(medium) and they fit wonderfully for my kayak trip through the Inside Passage. My measurements: 5’11”, 180 pounds, 34 inch waist, and 32” inseam. I only wore jockey shorts underneath. Yes, size L(large) seems like it would be the one for you. It’s a great product from a great company! Best, Jacob

I'd go with the XL. I'm 5' 11" with a 32" inseam, and the large fits me

      Answered on 10/1/2016 by Anonymous

You probably need the XL due to how tall you are.

Any chance you guys could do a modification in the form of a relief zipper for me? How much extra?

Hi Bart, sorry for the delay. Although Kokatat doesn't list it on their website, they do have the Men's Hydrus Whirlpool Bibs, with relief zipper and Hydrus socks for $345.00. Women's with dropseat and socks is $369.00. Making the Men's with ankle gaskets and zipper is a custom job, and more expensive, $405.00, with a 3-week turnaround time. I live in Virginia and am becoming interested in extending my kayaking season. I was looking at wetsuits and then a friend suggested a dry suit. The cost of a drysuit is somewhat high and I thought I could use this in combo with a dry top. Thoughts, suggestions, advice...please?

I have one of these as does another fellow paddler. It is an excellent multi season dry suit bottom. I use the bottom half in spring, fall, winter and vary the top with the season. I believe I am much more comfortable that full dry suit friends.
So depending on what your needs are I would recommend this with a dry top for multiple season changes. If you are a die hard all winter paddler then maybe a full dry suit one piece would be a better fit for you.

What type of boots & socks should I use with this? I was considering the storm boot and NRS hydroskin socks.

Those would be good choices, Shawn, but any combo of sock and/or water shoes will work with the Bibs. A lot depends on the type of boating you're doing, water temperature, etc. Give us a call, 800.635.5202, if you'd like to discuss options.

Answered on 12/10/2013 by Clyde from NRS

Those sound fine. I've been wearing wool socks with river booties and they
have kept my feet really warm and I've been kayaking recently with 15
degree weather. The hydro skin socks will be a good choice also.
