The Astral Men's Brewer is a kayaking shoe for all walks of life. It's both a water shoe and a casual shoe. Hop out of your boat and stroll to the pub in style.
  • This is a water shoe that looks as good as it performs.
  • It is so lightweight - less than 8 ounces (214 grams)! This minimalist construction also reduces use of toxic adhesives.
  • The upper is made with Cordura® and Airmesh for durable, breathable performance.
  • New G.SS™ "Super Sticky" rubber in the outsole gives you outstanding wet or dry traction.
  • The rockered toe helps the front of the shoe ride up over rocks and is naturally articulated for the kayaking position.
  • The shoe has plenty of drainage ports in sidewalls, sole and heel to rapidly get rid of water.
  • EVA foam in the Balanced Geometry midsole provides cushioning comfort and protection from sticks and stones.
  • The Brewer also has a step-down heel so you can wear it as a slip-on when you're not likely to get chundered.
  • Marking sole.

So first, these cost less than my normal footwear and since they are supposed to be river specific I thought I'd give them a go. On arrival I was far from stoked. The rubber seemed stiff on the soles, the uppers were a coarse material that didn't not seem like it would work with bare feet, and I was concerned the large drain holes would let in too much silt.

Turns out once you wear them in the river for a few days the uppers soften up, the rubber gets soft and sticky. So good!

Now I wear them everyday. It's super cool to wear the same shoes to work, over the drysuit, and into the playboat.

What's best: no cloth footbed, its just rubber. This way there is not stink! Wicked light weight is awesome too. And they dry plenty fast, the uppers aren't cored with an absorbent material the way most shoes are.

Finally, I'd been looking for a non-absorbent shoe to wear over drysuit booties for near 32f winter boating. Neoprene booties in this environment just hold really cold water to your feet and generally suck. These are going to be perfect!

After a couple days into a river trip, the left shoe wore a blister on the top of my foot, behind my big toe, and I had to start wearing socks. I like the shoes, and I will try them again next trip. Maybe I can smooth out the seam between the tongue and laces somehow.

Comments about Astral Men's Brewer Water Shoe:

I purchased these shoes exclusively for summertime kayak fishing. Currently I've been wearing Crocs while kayak fishing due to not finding/knowing of an appropriate shoe that could get wet and dry quickly, feel comfortable and light, stay cool in hot weather, and not look like you're wearing rubber socks. Many of the reviews seem to be on the money in regards to the fit, styling, and durability. To me these do seem to be a little on the narrow side and fit much like a soccer shoe. A few reviews mentioned that wearing socks helped to stretch out the shoe. This did seem to help a little and wearing socks in these shoes were very comfortable. I must admit that I have not "fully" tested these shoes out on the water. I bought these in anticipation of next year's fishing season. I have worn them quite extensively around the house and yard trying to see if I could anticipate any weaknesses or faults. The soles get tacky when wet which is a huge plus, and they let water out and dry pretty quickly. The back of the heal has openings at the bottom to help with draining the water. The textured rubber insole is amazingly comfortable and gives great support to your feet. They're also super light and very flexible. I honestly can't find anything that would keep me from purchasing again. I'm debating on getting another pair for when I wear these one's out. And as odd as this may seem, I was so impressed by this shoe that I purchased the Rassler also. (Thinking that it was a high-top version of the Brewer. It's not, but just as awesome!!)
The styling is super cool and these will rock on or off the water. I'm super excited to have these on my next kayak fishing excursion, and wish that I would have found these years ago.
These may be my new casual kicks and my Vans may end up on the shelf!

Comments about Astral Men's Brewer Water Shoe:

The quality of these shoes are very good. I love the look of them and they seem like a very good water shoe. However, I wear a size 13 and they these shoes felt very narrow and uncomfortable. I don't consider my feet to be very wide, and I really haven't had this type of problem before with other shoe manufacturers. It's a shame, because I really like these shoes otherwise.

                Q:

I'm looking for a water shoe to wear with a dry suit and gore-tex sock. Can you recommend any shoes that are really, really wide, and can accommodate a high volume foot? I have an extremely high arch that make fitting a real drag. I wear a 10.5 6E shoe when I can find it, otherwise I usually have to go up to a much larger size to get anything close to a fit (like a 12)

Yes, the toe box is wide and is similar in design to the Chaco saddles in this area. The instep area is tight on each side at first, however stretches out quite easily after a couple wears. I would say the ankle area is average, not wide however definitely not narrow here. I usually wear a standard size 9 in my trail running shoes, with the brewer I needed to drop down to a size 8 to get a comfortable water shoe feel. I love em.

I'm not sure exactly how wide a 13 EEE measures, but I can tell you that
this is the widest water shoe I've found and there is plenty of width for
me (average width feet). It fits more like a shoe as opposed to a water
sock. Might be best to contact the manufacturer regarding the 13 EEE fit.

I purchased these for my husband last Christmas. He had a full season of
kayaking in them and was extremely satisfied with the feel & fit. The
bottom is fairly grippy & he is able to get good traction walking on the
river bed. The shoe is not bulky or too thick though which allows him to
feel comfortable walking & feeling the terrain as well. Hope this helps !

I haven't tried them on a SUP, however I've worn them in kayaks. They are a well-designed shoe and incredibly light weight. The soles are designed for traction on wet rocks or concrete, and they work great for that. But In my experience they don't do all that well on wet docks or other surfaces. Also, the soles marked my kayak, and the marks were tough to remove. You might want to check out the Astral Porter. I have a pair. They are non-marking and have a slip-free sole. They are also more comfortable (to me) than the Brewer.

I also have wide feet. I bought one size up from my size and for a day or two they were a little tight. But they just kind of molded to my feet and are seriously my favorite pair of shoes I have ever worn. If your feet fit in your kayak the shoe is barely there you will have no problems.

The Brewer is a pretty low profile shoe. If you can wear other shoes with a full sole in your boat it should work. If you can only cram your feet in there with something super low profile, like the Desperado Sock, it's probably a no-go.
