The CRKT Bear Claw Knife is an extension of your hand that cuts rope and webbing like a razor. The blunt tip prevents point penetration in emergency situations.
  • The curve In the Triple-Point serrated blade concentrates the cutting motion for quick, easy severing of the material.
  • Blade control comes easy with the generous size finger hole and friction grooves on the blade spine, underside and near the tip.
  • The knife is held firmly in its sheath but releases smoothly with a jerk or thumb push.
  • Columbia River Knife & Tool makes the handle and sheath of super tough Zytel®, an injection molded composite that wears like metal.
  • The clip slips on a lashtab for handy access. The holes and slots in the sheath serve for additional security anchoring of the sheath to your PFD.
  • The clip is removable and can be moved to open toward the handle or tip end of the sheath. When mounted on the lash tab, the knife is oriented for a right-hand draw.
  • The shank of the blade runs the full length of the handle for superior strength.
  • The blade is made of taper ground AUS 4 stainless steel for excellent edge holding and corrosion resistance.

This is a really, really great tool - I had high expectations, but have straight away discovered even more areas for using it, eg.: -patien clothing removal, it even cut through my safety boots , just like a hot knife through butter - it now replaces my rescue scissors!

I have already reccommended it to alln my SAR-collegues.

CRKT, are you listening ...? I LOVE the knife (I own several versions), but the skinny belt clip makes attaching the sheath (in a stable fashion) nearly IMPOSSIBLE. Yes, I know it has slots that can be used to attach it to gear, but some of us want to attach it to our pant waistline, etc. With, this skinny belt clip, it just flops around. I own tons of knives, with many production and custom made sheaths, so I understand being FUNCTIONAL in its use. This belt clip causes a GOOD knife to be only rated "so so", because its hard to attach without modifying the sheath. FIX THAT, and I'd gladly buy a 100 of these knives (as gifts). But I wouldn't feel good giving it to any "casual users" friends/clients, based on the current design. And I've read other reviews of SERIOUS knife owners who have stated similar opinions. I wear my EDC knife on my waistline 7 days a week, 12 hours a day, and I'd love for this knife to be my EDC. But the sheath limits that possibility. GREAT knife otherwise, as it has a great FEEL, and they work great.

Comments about CRKT Bear Claw Knife:

Hands down, the best knife I've ever come across for any and all whitewater safety applications.

This knife is the easiest to deploy in emergency applications. When you're beat down and exhausted and/or your hands are frozen, the finger hole can make a world of difference. Whether you keep your knife on a PFD lash tab or in a pocket, this knife can very easily be deployed with one hand. There's no need to fumble around with flipping a knife open- just stick your finger in the hole and pull (if you wear your knife) or push the sheath off with your thumb (if you store it in a pocket). With the Bear Claw, there's no need to worry about accidentally dropping your knife while flipping it open or using it.

The concavely curved blade, combined with a blunt tip, makes this knife significantly safer to use in emergency situations. When you're cold and/or exhausted, it can be very easy to accidentally stab or cut yourself with a sharp- tipped, straight edged or convexly edged knife. The extremely sharp, serrated Bear Claw blade can very easily and safely cut though any skirt or rope, while minimizing risk of injury.

Some complain about the sheath. I've had no problems with it (my wife and I own 3 of these knives). However, I wear my knife up near my shoulder, not on the chest or belly of my PFD. I also loop some thin bungee (tied through the lanyard hole on the heel of the knife) around the tip of the sheath, to provide some extra security. I also use the knife only in emergency situations, minimizing wear on the sheath.

The handle is the most comfortable and ergonomic of any rescue/river knife I've come across.

Can't find a single fault with this knife.

Comments about CRKT Bear Claw Knife:

I had this secured via sheath to my tree climbing harness. Knife fell out of sheath, now lost to me. I liked it , but wouldn't buy again unless the sheath was more secure. If you kept it in a pfd pocket, then sure.

        Best Uses

Comments about CRKT Bear Claw Knife:

Like many others have said, this knife could really use an opposite hand scabbard.
Scabbard only holds well in the direction of the knife hanging.
Firm fit. I don't see how this could accidentally fall out, unless it wasn't fully seated after use. It requires a decent pull to extract.

            Q:

How well does this sheath work with the "lash tabs" on an Astral Norge PFD?

              A:

I have the Green Jacket, which has the same attachments as your Norge PFD.
I found the sheath to be a bit flimsy in how it connects to the lash tabs.
It does work, however, but it isn't a tight fit. I went ahead and
super-glued the clip closed after I got it on and it seemed to solve the
problem. Other knives have a more elegant and functional sheath
attachment, but I really like this knife and it seems to work fine now.

Bob, the Bear Claw sheath will fit fine on the Norge lash tab. The sheath clip can be reversed if needed. There are also slots in the sheath that facilitate extra tiedown options. Take a look at the More Views & Larger Images link to see these features.

            Q:

Is the sheath available in a configuration convenient for left handed customers?

If not, I request NRS to either get them from the maker, or, if CRKT doesn't offer them, request that they start doing so.

FYI, about 10% of people are left handed. Please stock handedness specific products for lefties as well as righties. If you think it isn't worth the trouble to stock products for left handed customers, think about how you stock male and female centered products and multiple sizes, even sizes such as XXS, XS or XXL. Surely those sizes are suitable for 10% or fewer of your customers.

              A:

I think it would depend on the type of attachments on your PFD. If you
used the clip on the back of the holder it would only work for a right
handed configuration. But if you could strap it on securely you could
easily flip it over and it would work for a lefty.

              A:

The Bear Claw only comes with the one orientation sheath. Though it's not ideal, you can mount it upside down, using the slots and holes in the sheath to secure it. Almost all the other knives we carry are either-hand accessible or have a reversible clip. I'll pass your concern along to our purchasers. You can also comment on the CRKT Bear Claw product page; I see that other lefties have done so.
