Comments about Yakima BowDown:

I put this on the factory crossbars so rotation is not a problem. I imagine that if it was on round bars it would tend to roll. Simpler to install and remove than other systems I've used. The wind whistle can get loud at times. When folded the noise is that much closer.

    Comments about Yakima BowDown:

These are great if you don't plan on taking the mounts off your car. If you do, go with the metal ones. I believe they are not as wide as the older model. Also, they tend to fall from side to side rather than stay stationary when moving a kayak around on them - what I assume to be because of the round bar and just basic physics. This may happen no matter what product but I found that to be a downfall with the product. Not sure about longevity of the product's life because it's all plastic. If I had to do it again, I would probably go with the older, metal frame model, but it really is all in how you plan to use them!

        Q:

Is there a solution to the whistle noise when driving over 45 mph? I drive on interstates 90% of the time and hate having to remove constantly.

Holly, take a look at the Yakima Fairing, Item # 62562.01. The reviews from users report significant noise reduction from its use.

This is good for any size kayak. I have had 10 ft to 22 ft on it. Also mounts on almost
          any rack. Highly recommend it.

I use these with 11-ft kayaks and they work great. There would be 2 issues
to consider when using these with another type of watercraft:
          1. Weight - a dead-lift is required to get the boat up onto the rack and so
anything too heavy (i.e > 50 lbs) might be a challenge, especially for 1
          person
          2. Side wall height - check the sidewall height of your craft to make sure
it will fit in the bottom cradle of rack

Ive got the yakima tie down. dont like it much cause foldable supports never stay completely tight, So Ill recommend it better for short travel but not for road travel.
Also it doesnt comes with the key locks. this are extras but didn´t say that on the add. Good luck!

          A:

I confess that I bought these racks for a kayak that I haven't yet finished building. I tried it with an 11' SOT. I found that just putting the SOT flat on the crossbars of my Yakima racks rather than the bow downs much easier. I am a single 70 yrs old woman, 5' tall and drive 4x4 Jeep Liberty. Loading a boat by myself can become a challenge. The vehicle is tall. I have a loader bar on my racks. I can get boats on top of my car with that. I can't get a boat into the bow downs with the loader bar by myself. I think that the question you are asking is how easy the bow downs are to use. Why can't the boat just be tied to the racks without something as exotic as the bow downs?

I have used my BowDowns for a 10 foot recreational boat and it worked fine. They also worked fine with my father's 12 foot recreational boat, so it would be a good choice for you. Only issue is you really need two people to easily and safely get the boat onto the roof and into the BowDowns due to the weight and length of the boat.
