Comments about Omega Five-0 Wire Gate Carabiner:

I wrote in my previous review that this carabiner is advertised as fitting over a paddle shaft. NRS did not advertise it as such. One reviewer stated that it fit over his paddle shaft, another stated that it didn't. I agree with latter and that's 2 different brands with regular paddle shaft diameter in my case (Lendal Storm, Celtic, both carbon).

Comments about Omega Five-0 Wire Gate Carabiner:

Advertised as being large enough to fit around your paddle shaft to get a free hand for rescues, etc.. Does not fit either my Lendal or Celtic paddle, both with a standard shaft diameter. Very disappointing.

The only Crab I have found that easily snaps over a paddle shaft and into the tight recesses behind many kayak safety/extraction bars

Comments about Omega Five-0 Wire Gate Carabiner:

Overall, I like the ease of use of this carabiner. It is easy to open quickly. However, NRS advertised this carabiner as handy for fitting around paddle shafts, but its mouth does not fit around my standard werner paddle shaft, a real disappointment. This shortcoming limits the utility I can get from this carabiner. I use this carabiner for securing paddling gear inside of my kayak or for quickly clipping together gear in a recovery/rescue situation on the river.

Is the wire gate on the the five-o carabiner the best for saltwater use where corrosion is a problem?

Have not used it on saltwater yet but I do think it would be well suited to use in saltwater. I paddle on big lakes in NY and VT and on occasion I make it over to the coast but have not hit the sea coast since I made the purchase.
Sorry I could be of more help.

John, the bow of the biner is aluminum, which will stand up pretty well to the salt. The gate is stainless steel, which is corrosion- resistant, but not corrosion-proof. The gate is "sprung" by the offset locations of the anchor points, which is better for corrosion than a leaf spring. Rinse thoroughly after each use, oil the gate and it should perform well for you.
