Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin 0.5 Shorts:

I bought the pair of Hydroskin 0.5 shorts just before going on a mid-June rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The first two days it was very cold, wet, rainy and because of the conditions, the rafting company supplied full length wet suits (made by NRS by the way). On day three the sun came out, but the water was still pretty cold. So instead of the wetsuit I wore these shorts and polypropylene leggings. Perfect combination. I sat in the front of a paddle raft for every day except one, and was of course subject to cold water drenching in rapid after rapid... with these shorts, the bottom part of me was never cold. The Hydroskin 0.5 shorts fit perfect, added just the right amount of warmth, dried quickly, didn't chaff... We got off the raft several times a day to take walks to look at waterfalls, petroglyphs, or lunch, and these shorts were comfortable to walk around in. No chaffing. Thicker neoprene would have been too much, and not having neoprene at all would have been really uncomfortable (i.e., cold). The thickness was perfect. I am sooooo glad I brought these for the trip. And these will be my go to shorts for any activity in which I think I might get wet with cold water. Highly recommended.

    Service and delivery comments:

I had never ordered anything before from NRS, and I found that delivery was fast (three days I think), and was able to track the shipment via UPS website. Delivery was exactly what they said it would be.

I am a bigger guy, 6' 1", 250 lbs, (with a little middle age spread) and run a Mamba year round and bought these shorts to use for everyday river running. On warmer days I wear them with an Under Armour top and I prefer them to say board shorts that are baggy and can bind up. On cooler days I wear them under my Farmer John and don't even notice they are there. I like the fit and wear and think they were well worth it.

Yes, that is what I use them for - cold water swimming. They are just
right for getting you into the water at that point when you are rigidly
standing on your tip toes! These are great.

                    swimming here in New England.

Steve, HydroSkin is a wetsuit-type garment and can certainly be used for swimming. There's also a 1.5 mm version of these short, which will give even more warmth - http://www.nrs.com/product/15043.01/nrs-mens-hydroskin-15-shorts - call 800.635.5202 or email service@nrs.com with questions.

Yes, they are basically a wetsuit but shorts. So, depending on the temperature, exposure time, and personal endurance, they can be used for cold water swimming. I have used mine in freshwater lakes in the Rockies. I also used a wetsuit jacket, short sleeve, and in combination they provide core insulation.

I would guess about 9 inches or 10.
I wear them under an 11" inseam swimsuit and they don't show. However,
they are long on the backside top, so they stick out high above the
drawstring of my swimsuit. You can see from the picture that the back is
                    higher than the front.
Overall they are great. They make cold water bearable. I can go in when
                    most others would not.
