How To: Patch a Hypalon Boat (5:09)

Properly patching a Hypalon raft or cataraft isn't difficult, but it does require specific tools, supplies and techniques. In this instructional video, the NRS Repairs Department shows you the materials, adhesives, solvents and skills you need to successfully glue a patch on your inflatable boat. This information applies to Hypalon, Pennel Orca and rubber inflatables. The same techniques can be used for gluing air-holding patches, D-rings and foot cups to your raft or cataraft. The video also includes tips for making temporary field repairs on the water.

How To: PVC and Urethane Boat Repair (3:11)

It's important to master the skills and techniques of patching your urethane or PVC fabric inflatable boat. In this video the NRS Repairs Department goes over the step-by-step process for finding the leak, preparing the surface of the patch and boat, applying the glue and rolling on the patch. The use of Clifton Urethane Adhesive is demonstrated, but the same techniques work with Stabond Adhesive, Vynabond and other PVC/urethane-type adhesives. Using these methods you can also add D-rings, foot cups and wear strips to your boat.

Extra D-rings provide more gear tie-down options, and footcups give you greater paddling control. NRS Repairs demonstrates the steps for gluing them so they stay permanently in place.

      A:

Hey, RG, the narrower the edge of the roller wheel, the more pounds per square inch pressure you're putting on the material. But of course, the more strokes it takes to cover the area. Our folks in the boat factory use the 2" x 1/16" tools and really lean into their work. So personal choice, but I'd go either 1/16" or 1/8".

      A:

I bought the 1/8 inch, but I would recomend the 1/4 inch as a better all a round roller. No patches are going to be that easy in the field. In fact there is some emergency patch tape available that is supposed to be very good. So good that it is difficult to remove. The instructions I read suggested putting the permanent patch over the tape.

I used the pro roller to attach a D Ring and it worked well. The adhesive is more important than size of roller.  I am not aware of other sizes however

Used this roller to help fasten D-ring patches to an inflatable kayak. It was able to get into tight folds of the floor to put pressure on the freshly glued patches. I mounted six D-rings one afternoon and would never have been able to stay at it that long without an excellent tool like this.

Making long-lasting repairs begins with having the right equipment. Do the job right the first time by using this roller tool and you'll have the reassurance that the patch will hold. It provides the pressure needed to allow the glue to stick.

Comments about Pro Roller Hand Tool:

I started using this to install eight D-rings on my boat in one day, but quickly figured out that the wooden handle of a paint brush worked better because I could use the point to account for the bump better. Perhaps that would be a product improvement for the next version of this tool.
