Commonly heard complaints from boaters are "My wetshoes dry slowly" and "My shoes really stink." The problems are related. Neoprene shoes don't "breathe" so moisture escapes slowly unless you work to eliminate it. And bacteria and other microorganisms in the water and from your feet can generate odors in those moist conditions. This video shows how to clean and dry watershoes to head off odor. And if stinky shoes happen, we show how to eliminate it.

  • NRS Comm-3 Wetshoe - Closeout

    Q:

I'm looking for wetshoes to wear over my latex drysocks. I have a pair of size 11 NRS felt sole wetshoes comfy with regular sock that are too snug with the dry socks and the inside socks. How big should I order?
Asked on 9/19/2014 by Kelly from Lyons, OR

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Kelly, the sizing will depend on the thickness of the insulating socks you wear inside the drysuit sock. The 3 mm neoprene of the Comm-3 should supply enough warmth for most folks so that a light/medium weight wool or synthetic hiking sock should be sufficient. I wear a size 10 1/2-11 street boots/shoes and use size 12 wetshoes with our latex sock drysuits.

Wow, Christina, individuals' feet are so variable. For reference, an 8" long foot should fit in a size 3 shoe and 8 1/4" in a size 4.

Gil, looking at the reviews most folks think it fits right according to size, and the ones who don't think so are pretty evenly divided, small and large. If you plan to wear anything inside the shoe, like a drysuit sock or neoprene wetshoe sock, go up a size. If you're going to wear it over bare feet or a thin fabric sock, go with the 10. If you don't like the fit, exchanges are easy and free. If you plan to use it right away on a trip, buy both sizes and keep the one you like best. Easy peasy.

The sizes for this product are difficult. I actually bought two pairs
because of this. I have 11s for cooler trips where I wear a couple pairs
of wool socks for added warmth. For the summer I have a size 10. These
are rather snug and would not be fun to walk in for longer distances, but I
am in the canoe sitting. They run big. I normally wear a 11.5 running
      shoe for your reference.

    Q:

I ordered and received the NRS Paddle Wetshoe (closeout) in a size 6. I'm a women's 7.5 and hoped they would fit, but I think they're a little too snug. Could they stretch a little when wet??

How sturdy is the sole on the Comm-3 wetshoe? I'm heading to Mexico for a fishing trip and need a good flats boot that will protect my feet from coral, etc. Would this shoe work?

      Hi,
I have two pairs of the COM3 shoe. Yes they should protect you from coral
underfoot. The sizing should go by half sizes. I got the size up and down
from what would be ideal, as it is not offered. I can wear some socks in
cold weather with the big ones and deal with the snug fit in the summer.
They stretch when dry and wet. It may be annoying if they are to snug,
but if the fishing is on who cares.

My wife and I have used this shoe for about 6-7 years for whitewater kayaking in CO, UT, and ID. Works great in rocks and, although we've never used it in coral, I'd guess it'd work fine.
As far as the sizing, They may stretch a little (maybe a half size)when wet, but I think I'd go with a size that fits you. I'm a size 10 and wear a 10, with my dry suit. This works fine for me, a little snug, but fine. Not much walking with whitewater kayaking, so I think I'd go with your usual size. A half-size smaller would probably be okay, but not sure how 1.5 smaller will work, even when wet.
Hope this helps you. Have a good trip.

They will stretch out some when wet, and you will probably like the
snugness when using them as a flats shoe, a little more stable. All in all
      a good shoe.

Hi there. Yes, these will be great for coral. Lots of padding. The shoes
definitely stretch once they fill with water. They probably stretch ½ to 1
size???? I would suggest filling up a bucket with water and submerging them
to test them out. Better to know if they are too small before you go.

Those Paddle Wetshoes won't stretch significantly. The sole on the Comm-3 is a bit beefier, 5 mm thick as opposed to the 3 mm in the Paddle Shoe. Go with a size 7.

      Hey there.

This shoe does not really stretch much. It may a little but I would say not enough to be comfortable if they are already snug.

Shoe itself is pretty tough and we use it to climb all over rocks beside the river as well as walking to and from the car to the put in and take out.  It is great on the flats and comfortable.

Coral walking no clue as I have not been around coral.  It may cut through the side of the fabric.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

If you were to purchase these to wear over foot waders (which I didn't & probably wouldn't).
The size of the wetshoe to purchase would depend on how snug the
footwaders are & the thickness of the foot wader material you are
sliding the wetshoe over. You also need to consider the wetshoe opening
& how you will fit your foot & neoprene sock through a 4 inch
round opening (even if you do contort that 4 inch opening when pulling on). The wetshoe construction is tightest around the ankle when pulling on, to make a snug fit when zipped up.
My shoe size is 10 1/2-11 (US/Can), I purchased size 11 NRS Comm-3 wetshoe & it fits well. The width I would guess is D (medium) & stretch's to my wide foot. The inner surface of the wetshoe is the same material as outer neoprene material, so a wet foot slides in as well as expected. The wetshoe sole is constructed to provide hours of comfortable walking over shore rocks with wet feet. But I do take off neoprene as soon as possible when wearing multiple days, to avoid skin problems. I like the way the rubber sole of the shoe wraps around the heal, to
cushion the heal & avoid bruising of the heal from hours sitting in cockpit. The toe to heal length of size 11 wetshoe sole is 12 inchs long & the toe of wetshoe does not hit my upper hull. Its a great kayak shoe & quality product.

No these aren't really waterproof. Water can get in the zipper and the fabric is slightly porous. If you submerge them you will eventually get wet. They are designed to keep you warn even when wet. I would, however, describe them as "water resistant." With only slight splashing your feet will remain fairly dry. In any case they will keep you feet pretty warm. They are quiet good at that.

      Hello,
The short answer is no. The neoprene is waterproof, though these are
designed to be completely suberged. I typically wear them with thick wool
socks (I was inbetween sizes and went big so I could add socks). The shoe
is designed to take on water, but keep your feet warm. It is the same
      concept as a wet suit.

I have had this boot for a few years. With no problems at all, I wear them: 1) in bear feet, 2) with neoprene socks, and 3) with full dry suit over neoprene socks. The boot has always been fine: comfortable, easy to put on, easy and safe to walk in on rocky shores, etc.

As far as your "sizing" question, I've had a couple of pairs of these boots, but I'm not sure if I had the "original kickers". The two or three pairs that I have had both fit the same, as I remember.

I went ahead and bought my normal shoe size... got these things and they were abnormally large!! I bought them for kayaking and when I swam the first time, I almost kicked both of them off because they instantly filled up with water and due to there being no tightening strap there was nothing holding them on my feet. I would strongly recommend Nrs not make a wet shoe without a strap to hold them on. If you are going to buy these even after my strong advisement not to, order a size smaller!!!

I am very pleased with this purchase. Have only use twice but performed as expected and do not see any problems. Good value.
