How To: Inflatable Repair Adhesives Guide (4:16)

When repairing your Hypalon, PVC or urethane inflatable, or your plastic or composite kayak, it's vital that you choose the right adhesive and solvent for the job. Using the wrong materials will result in a poor repair and wasted effort. In this video, Josh from NRS Repairs shares an inflatable repair adhesives guide to help you understand when to use such glues as Clifton Hypalon, Shore, Stabond, Clifton Urethane, Vynabond and G/flex Epoxy. Solvents for repair prep are important too; you'll also learn when you can use toluene, MEK, acetone and alcohol.

How To: Patch a Hypalon Boat (5:09)

Properly patching a Hypalon raft or cataraft isn't difficult, but it does require specific tools, supplies and techniques. In this instructional video, the NRS Repairs Department shows you the materials, adhesives, solvents and skills you need to successfully glue a patch on your inflatable boat. This information applies to Hypalon, Pennel Orca and rubber inflatables. The same techniques can be used for gluing air-holding patches, D-rings and foot cups to your raft or cataraft. The video also includes tips for making temporary field repairs on the water.

    Is this hypalon?

      A:

Yes, it is. I used this stuff to reinforce/patch some areas of heavy wear
on my 11' Avon inflatable. I would definately recommend this product. It
was easy to work with. I had to cut out patterns and different shapes and
had no problems. I use my boat in salt water and it gets dragged across
muscle beds with tons of rocks and barnacles. The hypalon fabric is durable
enough to withstand that. The glue/edge doesn't catch and peel off on all
      those surfaces as well.

      Pennel Orca Boat Material
Since 1994, NRS has used Pennel's "Orca" material in
manufacturing our Expedition and Otter rafts, River Cat and Kodiak
cataraft tubes, and MaverIK inflatable kayaks. Pennel originally used
DuPont® Hypalon® as a coating on their Orca material. Because of the
Hypalon coating, inflatables built with Orca fabric – including these
NRS designs – were commonly referred to as Hypalon boats.
Hypalon is DuPont's name for the chemical compound chlorosulfonated
polyethylene (CP), which the company invented in 1940. In April 2010,
DuPont stopped making Hypalon and Pennel needed to find another source
of high-quality CP. They did; and extensive testing has shown that the
newly sourced CP provides the same superior performance that our
customers have come to expect from NRS boats.
      Over the years,
CP has proved to be an excellent material for making boats. First of
all, it's great at holding air... a most important feature for
      inflatables! It's also super abrasion-resistant, UV-resistant and
chemical-resistant. Other uses for CP include roofing materials and
liners for chemical treatment lagoons – so you know it's tough stuff!
You'll no longer see the term "DuPont Hypalon" used to describe NRS
boats (or any other manufacturer's boats). Look for "NRS Pennel Orca"
instead – along with the uncompromising quality that has made NRS a
      worldwide leader in inflatable boats.

Yes , Thi s is hypalon if the photos are of Orca fabric... It is by far the highest quality hypalon on the marked today.

      A:

Hypalon is a Dupont registered name and Dupont has stopped making the
material. It is my understanding that Pennel Orca is the same material
made in France. Achilles also has compatible fabric they call
      chlorosulphonated polyethylene, or CSM.

I used this on my aging Avon R310. Lots of worn spots where the meshing are starting to appeared from the rocks in Tomales Bay. I used this material to put another skin on top of the worn areas for many more years of worry free dinghy. Good stuff, easy to use, flexible and tough.
