I would prefer to have a dry suit below 50 degrees. But I have swam in this
when it was below 40 and was still relatively comfortable for the rest of
      the run.

      A:

My husband wears it when doing flat-water marathon kayaking (high exercise
load). The temperature range is a tricky question. Where we live in
eastern Kansas, winter temperatures can be extremely cold (we had -20 F air
temperatures last week) or warm (it'll be 65 tomorrow), but the water was
just above freezing on both those days and he went out in it. He wears the
hydroskin in the warm air temperatures with the zipper open when the water
is that cold, and wears it with several additional layers when the air
temperatures are really cold. It is very versatile with one of its
greatest advantage being its protection from the wind and its ability to
keep his core temperature comfortably warm despite the outside temps.
      Hope this helps!

I wear the half mil Farmer John when the sun is out and I don’t plan on getting too wet. Standup Paddling Boarding on a sunny day, 50 degree air temp, and wind less than 5 mph on flat water. Also SUPing in the ocean in May and September on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. I also have a 3 mil Farmer John and a 2 mil long sleeve jacket and a short sleeve Hydro Skin shirt. I mix and match all the time.

If it's .5 mm it's not going to be much good for swimming or diving much
below 75 F water. Wet suits are no good for kayaking I got rid of all
mine and use paddling pants and jacket or dry suit.

Yes it is very thin, maybe twice the thickness of a rash guard. It will
protect you from the sun, keep you warm from wind and water, and protect
your legs from cuts. It is super comfortable, I love mine.

The HydroSkin material is thin,,,definitely thinner than the RapidSyle suit. Its a snug fit…more like a traditional neoprene wetsuit. Be aware that you'll want to order one size larger than you normally wear. I'm 5'11"/165lbs and I wear an XXL in this particular suit. Warmth wise…it seems to be about the same as the RapidStyle suit. Hope this helps.

      A:

      Hi Paul,
For some reason, the sizing on this item is pretty inaccurate. At 5'11'/ 165, I usually wear a Medium, sometimes a Large in wetsuits, rash guards, splash jackets and the like. For the HydroSkin Farmer John, I had to go to an Extra Large. That size is an OK fit…but still pretty snug.
Its possible that the nature of the HydroSkin material may have something to do with the snugness. I have discovered that I really have to pull in my stomach when I don't have my splash jacket on in order to preserve any vestige of my former self :-)
I'd definitely go with the the XXL. Or…order both and return the one that doesn't fit. NRS offers free return shipping. I've done that before.
      Hope this helps.

      A:

HydroSkin should certainly help moderate your body temp. It's a lightweight wetsuit garment, with 0.5 mm of closed-cell neoprene. It doesn't "breathe" so the sweat you generate will stay inside but it won't readily evaporate, which sucks heat away. You're probably already wearing rain/splashwear . You should consider wearing something like our HydroSilk rashguard under the Farmer John.

Had tried this at a sea kayak symposium, and it was my first (at first) choice when it came to getting a wetsuit. Wasn't at the local paddling shop, so took the "bricks to clicks" clothing ordering route and risks.

Much less restrictive than typical 3 mm thick wetsuit. Length was good. Still needed more space in my chest. I'm 5'7" and 165#, was really surprised with the tightness of this wear.

Went to a second sea kayak symposium. Thank God, got to try on a used 3 mm wetsuit. Was it the manufacturer? Or was it its previous high use? Don't know, but the used wetsuit bested this 'regular' and a Grizzly .5mm wetsuit.

Probably better fitting and more comfortable than new 3 mms. Don't know - I bought the used wetsuit and returned the .5 mm.

Comments about NRS Men's HydroSkin Farmer John - Closeout:

Bought for use when a dry suit or 5mm wet suit was to hot to wear for conditions and water was a little chilly. Perfect for that use. Not heavy enough for use once water gets below 50 degrees.
Very comfortable to wear paddling, seems to be pretty durable. This is sort of a scaled down farmer john wet suit for times you are not worried about hypothermia, but are looking for a little warmth for comfort.
Like most other NRS products, it does what it was intended for.
The only improvement that I could see is a zippered ankle, it is not a deal breaker however. Overall great suit for what is meant to do.
