  • NRS Rio Top Paddle Jacket

    Q:

I have an NRS splash jacket which I bought new several years ago. It's not identical to this one, but looks and sounds very similar. I have used it a lot. The outer fabric (blue woven material) is in very good condition, and the velcro closures are holding up OK. I have never washed it with anything but tap water and a garden hose. Now for my problem: The white plastic inner lining material is disintegrating and falling out in small pieces. The jacket still functions well enough for my needs, but the disintegrating liner fabric makes a mess everywhere I go. Is there some way to fix this problem, or is it time for me to get a new splash jacket?

Unfortunately, it's probably time for a new splash jacket. There is one product out there, REI carries it, that is designed to replace the waterproof coating on the backside of rainflies and other outdoor equipment. It's difficult to work with, and most often results in a very sticky, and inconsistent coating.

We use the Rio jackets for our school trips that include rafting on the North Johnstone river in Queensland, Australia. Its rated in the top 10 raft trips in the world and the RIO is perfect for the occasion. We also use it on the frigid waters in our south and its great with a thermal to protect from the cold. For the low price, it doesn't get much better than the RIO.

It is good for flatwater, but if you run whitewater then definitely get a drytop. Plus the neck isn't very comfortable, and I don't see a point to the open folded area below the neck. I understand that it is so you can get it on and off easily, but if you take a big splash of water to the chest at the right angle it will go right through to whatever you're wearing underneath. A stretchier neck would make more sense.

Comments about NRS Rio Top Paddle Jacket:

I bought this jacket for my daughter. It is the exact duplicate in adult size as her kid's one. Knowing that she will grow again , this is a great solution to keeping her dry and wind free on the river.

This jacket is nice with a polar layer under it in cooler temps. It does well in warmer times to keep the wind and weather as well as potential river water out. It is a good choice for the price.

This is a great value for the money. The gift recipient is thrilled and it fit him perfectly. He is replacing a splash jacket that was about 30 years old. Do wish it came in more colors, but at least we'll be able to see him bobbing in the water if he falls out of his boat.
