Comments about Aluminum Cover for the Firepan:

It is great that the firepan and the cover are sold separately. Since I bought the firepan bag also, I could have skipped this purchase.

This is a 'must' add on for the fire pan. Looks great and it's light weight. I just with it was included in the original purchase of the fire pan.

Comments about Aluminum Cover for the Firepan:

If you have the firepan you need this cover. It keeps the soot from the firepan from getting on your other gear. It also keeps the firepan grate inside the firepan.

          I just measured. The cover is 15 3/4” by 24 5/8”. I think it’ll work perfectly for your 15 1/2" by 24”

Can the lid be used as a base for dutch oven cooking?

Probably. My cover seems strong enough to support a small dutch oven. I
suggest trying it at home before taking it on a trip.

          A:

Nate, you could absolutely use the cover as a dutch oven base. It is
sturdy, plenty of space, and the lip would contain the coals. However, I
have found it better as a food prep surface, and use the firebox itself as
the DO base. Not as precise control if you are counting briquettes for the
bottom, but with a good bed of coals, and the grill on the lower setting,
there is plenty of room for both grilling and DO on the grate. Either way,
you have plenty of options, and I end up using the firebox more for my
          dutch oven than for grilling.

Nate, I wouldn't recommend that. Heat from the DO cooking can warp the lid. I bring along a garbage can lid to hold the Dutch.

I never have used it for that but I'm sure you could. I have used the lid for many things like a wash stand for clothing and dishes. A fan for the fire. A shield to block wind for cooking.
