The ECO-Safe Toilet System excels as a highly portable, reusable system. The crushproof plastic tank is good for 50 uses at one time. Meets BLM, NPS and USFS requirements. The 1998 Mt. Everest Cleanup Project chose the ECO-Safe Toilet for use on their expedition.
  • The system includes one tank, seat assembly, 3" cleanout hose and washout hose adapter.
  • The rotomolded plastic tank is crushproof. It has rounded corners for easy cleaning. The tank inner dimensions are 16.5" x 7" x 11" Tall. It holds 5.5 gallons, good for approx. 50 uses and fits inside a 20mm "rocket" box.
  • The comfortable toilet seat, with lid, locks onto the tank. The flange under the seat funnels waste into the tank. At 17" above ground level, the seat is as high or higher than your home toilet.
  • The system meets all requirements of the BLM, NPS and USFS for a washable, reusable toilet. It empties easily at an RV dump or in a Scat Machine.
Many boating areas now require you to carry out human waste. Even for those that don't, the removal of waste products protects the environment. Always check ahead with the area management agency to find out what they require for carry out systems.

We are using this system and a spare tank for raft-based multi-day river trips. Its strong point is that it fits into an ammo can (be sure to check fit first!) that can be tied to the floor of your raft. It sets up quickly and doesn't leak (very important). My only quibble is that you need to take a brush and some cleaner to get the seat really clean for packing.

      Comments about ECO-Safe Toilet System:

Great design, except for seat attachment, which can easily be rectified by adding a strap attachment to the underside of the front of the seat and strapping the front down to the rocket box handle with, what else, an NRS strap! after connecting the nipple and hole in the back. Most new groover crews must be shown the functionality of the back attachment; they miss it on their own.

        Comments about ECO-Safe Toilet System:

The Eco toilet does its job well and I'm quite satisfied with it, but it requires one modification. As manufactured and set up according to directions, the seat doesn't remain in its proper position. When the lid is opened to its normal open position it lifts the seat and under-seat chamber away from the tank opening, allowing any urine left in the underseat portion to run outside the tank into the ammo can. I've solved this by adding a strap loop to the underside front of the seat and using a strap I can fasten the front of the seat down to the front handle of the ammo box. I don't know how this seat could remain in place with the lid open and nobody sitting on the seat without using an ammo box and a strap as detailed above.

Please. I need to know the dimensions of ammo can that the tank system goes into. The markings on the cans I have are painted over, so I don't know what ammunition went inside.

I did not use an amo can. I built a base with three sides out of plywood
to make it more stable to sit on. Worked well. Plywood needs to be
treated if you are using it in one place for a long time.

This toilet is excellent and I'd recommend it to anyone for rafting with
any size group. The toilet does have one small flaw, however:
unrestrained, the seat slips off the tank hole and dribbles urine down
between the tank and box walls. The next person to use it, if unaware,
can damage the seat ring that fits into the tank hole if they don't
reposition the seat before sitting. A simple solution is to attach a
tiedown strap to the underside front of the seat base and snug down the
seat base front to the front handle of the rocket box using a short NRS
strap when setting the toilet up. Inform all groover crews at the
beginning of the trip and you'll have clean, dry boxes at the end.
              Have fun on the river!

Here's the box the Eco-Safe fits snugly in - http://www.nrs.com/product/2729.1/surplus-rocket-box-20mm-ammo-can - We use the terms "rocket box" and "20mm" in describing it, because that's how they're popularly referred to as. What ammo went into them, I can't say. The dimensions of the ammo can are given there on the product page. Also, on the Eco-Safe page, in the Specs tab, we give the external dimensions of the tank. FYI, the toilet seat will fit in the same size ammo can, with some additional room for cleaning supplies, gloves, etc.

Before ordering this, we always used a folding seat set over an open ammo can. Breakdown each morning before getting underway on the river was easy: fold up seat, put lid on ammo can. But this chute design, (between the seat and can)--seems like it will catch waste, require cleaning each time you break down the unit, be very messy and gross. But no one seems to have had problems with the chute. What am I missing?

This system requires 2 rocket boxes. One for the tank, and one for the seat and all cleaning supplies. I carry a tub of Clorox wipes, and a toilet brush (in a plastic bag), in the box with the seat. Each user is responsible for wiping down their own "skidmarks" at the time of use. I've never heard any complaints, and it's never been an issue for me.

The unit comes with a small squirt bottle, we've thrown in a little bigger one, there's not really a place for much to become stuck or lodged, it's fairly straightforward. The bottle is just for a small "flush" in the event it's needed. Obviously one can quickly fill up the tank with water, but we've never had issues. The unit and supplies occupies one ammo can, the tank, the other. It's pretty slick, perhaps the best is that it's contained and airtight--then add the extra layer of the ammo can!

It's not bad - most of the poop goes straight into the tank.
But we always carry some gloves, a scrub brush, and some bathroom cleaner in the box with the seat. After last call in the am, one person takes the seat down to the river and gives it a quick scrub while others pack up the tank, hanitizer, magazines, and binocs.

              Paddle gal,
Keep some Handy-Wipes & Nitril gloves with the supplies. Wipe the inside chute clean when packing-up. Toss the wipe & glove in a separate zip plastic bag (not in the groover). Store the plastic bag with the supplies for future additions or place the plastic bag in the trash. Simple. And, it is what it is. It's not a big deal.

The chute can catch waste. One hopes everyone on the trip cleans up after themselves. I think the advantage is the ability to dump in a RV dump station. There are no SCAT machines or such in my area. My method of cleaning is to have some sort of cleaning wipe, wear a disposable glove, wipe the whole thing down (top, seat, and chute), fold the glove over the wipe, and throw it away in the trash.

We use the biodegradable type designed for RV's. It dissolves much faster and doesn't stick to the plastic.

Absolutely, it's just like at home--with the exception of the running water, so with a spare gallon jug or old squirt bottle to act as the flush, it comes with a small one, but a simple bike bottle seems to work best. Too much water then it takes up tank space, just as too much paper would as well. Then when you're off the river, find a cleanout and it straps down and cleans out just like anything. The best feature of the unit is the ability to solidly fit into (2) 20mm ammo can--which serve to protect your equipment as well as protect from any accidents while on or off the river. One can for the tank, one for the seat, tp, other equipment.

I can only give you my opinion… Since there is no flushing system here to clog, I don’t know why you wouldn’t put your toilet paper in. I know that many folks on long trips try to use a separate box for the paper, but quite frankly that seems even more unsanitary to me.
Don’t know where you are rafting but here in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, most of the multi-day rivers have machines for clean out and these toilets work great on those. They take normal t.p. just fine. Personally I use RV paper, but that’s just because it breaks down more easily.

Yes you can put TP into the toilet. Most groover cleaning machines work
with the eco safe toilet and can deal with TP. I have mine set up in two
rocket boxes - one with the toilet itself and a second with the toilet lid,
              extra TP and cleaning supplies.

Yes, we do all the time. The poop helps pack it down.
System works best if you slip the plastic tank into a rocket box and put the
seat, TP, hand wash, gloves, scrub brush, magazines and binoculars in
another box. Then just cinch em down to your raft's floor behind the rowing
              seat.
We usually take the boxes to an RV cleanout to get them really clean and
treated with some dilute bleach solution (don't use full strength).
Good luck - we've been using our system for about 6 years with no spills.

The seat fits into the same size ammo can the tank fits in . with a bit of
room to put tp, deodorizer, etc.
So get two ammo cans the same size that fit the tank and you are good.

The seat, along with brush and Clorox wipes, fit in one 29mm rocket box and the tank fits in a second 20mm box

The seat is designed to fit on top of the ECO-Safe tank, which will fit inside a 20 mm/rocket box type ammo can. The width of the bottom part of the seat is 7 1/2".

It fits fine, & works well. We have another 20 mm can that we keep the seat in & there's room for TP, & hand sanitizer. It's a good setup.

            Q:

We lost our washout hose adapter for the Eco-Safe Toilet. Can we get a replacement? I've seen them in plastic and brass. Do you offer both or just plastic?

            Thanks

Are round replacement gaskets available for top screw on tank lids? Worn gaskets starting to leak a little.

We have not had any problem with the gaskets, but our use of the Eco-Safe
has been light. Sorry we can't help further.

I am a very satisfied user of the Eco-safe system for several years now, purchased from NRS. On a trip this last summer we lost overboard the toilet seat. Any idea where we can get a replacement?
