  • Brunton 58 Kayak Compass

    Q:

I purchased one of these and have found it has reversed poles, so north is now south. How can I correct this?

Did the compass actually change from when you purchased it? Since the compass is designed to be deck mounted in front of your cockpit the "N" will be on the south side of the compass. As you look forward across the compass you will be looking across the N and to the north. I hope this was helpful.

Peter, it sounds like a warranty issue. If you bought it directly from us, please send the compass back.using our Hassle-Free Returns process - http://www.nrs.com/shop/returns.asp

This usually happens when you have stored the compass in close proximity to an iron object. The only true fix is to send it back to the manufacturer (having contacted them in advance about the problem). Most compass manufacturers will correct the problem at no charge, other than the costs of your shipping.

WERE YOU HOLDING THE COMPASS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WHEN YOU LOOKED AT IT OR PUT IT ON THE KAYAK? IT COULD HAVE BEEN BACKWARDS?

How do I adjust for declination. Here it is 23 degrees east declination.

      A:

Bob, the 58 Kayak is not adjustable for declination. Brunton makes a 58CE model that's only $4 more that is adjustable which we can order for you.

Comments about Brunton 58 Kayak Compass:

To sit in the center of your kayak, additional rope needed to be added so that compass stayed in the center and was readable.

Comments about Brunton 58 Kayak Compass:

After considering a mountable compass (that looks awesome), I decided on this one that was much more cost effective and the idea of removing it easily and quickly to prevent accidental damage, has proven the better choice for me. The Bruton 58 is a top quality, aestetically pleasing compass that you would find in much more expensive models.

Comments about Brunton 58 Kayak Compass:

I hard-mounted two of these 58's to the deck hatches in my sit-on-top tandem sailing sea kayak by disassembling each housing (2 screws), removing the bungee straps & neoprene pad, bolting each housing directly to the kayak with brass screws, washers, & nuts, and then reassembling each housing (2 screws). That way, both persons in the kayak have their own compass to monitor, and one compass backs up the other. In my usage, I have found the following: the Brunton 58 is very accurate, both give the exact same reading, they can handle lots of heavy wave activity on the open sea/Gulf of Mexico, and they look great mounted to my boat! In addition to the two that I have hard-mounted on my sea kayak, I have a third 58 that I use with my inflatable tandem kayak; for this I use the bungee straps provided with the compass and simply strap it to the deck rigging.
