The Hot Shot Signal Mirror/Whistle Combo assures that you are seen and heard. The unique aiming device lets you be sure you're aiming the light beam at your target. Essential signaling devices for open water and back country boating.

Here's how it works (and the instructions are right there on the back of the mirror):
1. Hold the back of the mirror close to one eye.
2. Reflect sunlight into your hand.
3. When you look through the inner hole in the mirror a red spot will be visible.
4. Move the red spot to the target and that shows you where you are signaling. The red spot is an optical illusion created by the red reflective material that surrounds the inner hole in the mirror.

The dual tone whistle gives a piercing blast of sound that can be heard over a long distance. It's attached to the mirror with a bright yellow lanyard. The attached float will save the unit if you drop it overboard.

    Q:

I need an "Air Force Type" signal mirror for my self support kayaking trip on the Grand Canyon this winter. This is required by NPS. Does this product meet those requirements?

Yes it will meet that requirement. I have personally used this mirror to satisfy that requirement on a GC trip.

The NPS could give a definitive answer, but yes it looks like a similar design and works the same way as standard USAF and USMC issue.  Then again, you could just get the real thing, the Star Flash signal mirror from Ultimate Survival Technologies.  It's smaller, brighter and floats without a bobber.  Practice before you need it and don't leave home without it.

I think it should meet that requirement easily. It’s easy to use and way better than others that I have owned in the past.
You are headed on the trip from my bucket list! I am envious! May it be every thing you hope it will be.

Yes, The mirror has a sighting system, so it will pass the NPS requirements. Good whistle too. But you won't have room for the little float that's attached if you're doing a winter self support kayak trip on the Grand...

Well I can't say for sure that its Air Force type but I can say the mirror like backing peeled off of mine in a couple months. I kept mine in my pfd and I kayak 2-4 times a week. When I did the Grand Canyon winter 2011 I don't recall the ranger checking for a signal mirror they just made sure we had a sat phone fire pan and groovers. The rangers were mellow and just took our word for most of the stuff. But we had our stuff dialed and they knew we knew what we were doing. Enjoy the grand check out silver grotto, elves chasam the trail is hard to find but it's on the right side. Hope this helped

Hello, NRS asked me to reply to your question, but I'm afraid I don't know what the NPS requirements are exactly. I would suggest that this item most likely meets or exceeds the park service requirements however, from pervious experience. I do own this mirror, and it's more advanced than the old military surplus stuff if that helps.
The floating lanyard is a serious bonus on the water!
      Hope that helps,

Pros

  • Easy To Use

Cons

  • Reflective Mats Fall Off
  • Unreliable

Best Uses

  • Hiking
  • Whitewater
  • Wilderness Survival

Comments about ACR Hot Shot Signal Mirror/Whistle:

The reflective backing peels off quickly. This product lasted one hiking trip before the mirrored backing fell off. I recommend a glass signal mirror, not a plastic one. I Enjoy several products that NRS sells but this one is horrible. It is a poorly manufactured survival tool. I hope NRS will provide a solid glass alternative.

  • Needs a sturdy pouch

Best Uses

  • Day Trips

Comments about ACR Hot Shot Signal Mirror/Whistle:

Items arrived just as advertised, would like a pouch for all of it to protect the mirror, right now lives in heavy plastic bag in my PFD pocket. Haven't had to get rescued yet, but am confident it would help if needed.
